Lenovo Yoga S740 Linux - Trackpad very temperamental and FN Keys barely work

2020-09-06, 14:11 PM

I have a Yoga S740 (specced out with a i5 1035G4 and the Intel Wireless AX card) and am trying to run Linux on it. However unfortunately the trackpad sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.

I have read online that other Lenovo laptops have experienced the same issue and it was fixed with a BIOS update? However the latest BIOS update for this laptop is June 2020 and as of this one, it is not fixed. If it helps, when the trackpad doesn't work dmesg reveals that the "i2cdesignware i2cdesignware.1: controller timed out"

Further, the ACPI doesn't seem to work properly as the device often fails to turn off (instead reaching a black screen but staying on), sleep doesn't work and the only FN keys that seem to work are volume and the lock button.

All issues have been tested on multiple linux distributions, including my current Arch install with testing repos enabled

I would really appreciate it if we could sort this out as it is seriously hindering my workflow.

As an update to this, I tried the latest 5.9.0 release candidate (booted Fedora Rawhide) and it looks like the trackpad may be fixed as there are no more timeout errors.

However, the FN keys still don't work. I have tried acpi_listen and buttons such as brightness do not register at all. Further there is an error to do with acpi_irq failing in the dmesg, followed by IRQ9 failing.

@DaveOber I have seen you mention in other threads that there could be a small change that needs to be made in the BIOS, is this something that we could investigate further? I have the very latest BIOS for my Yoga S740 (BYCN36WW, released 5 days ago) and the issue has not improved.

I am also experiencing the same problem. Does not turn off, the touchpad does not work, and the brightness keys do not work

And I got here after posting my experiences on this forum:

Glad to hear it's not just me (looking through the thread we have the same model).

I've been following the trackpad on https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=252711 and from what I've come across, our model of trackpad used to work and then something broke it. However the older kernels don't work for our device so those aren't an option.

Normally in dmesg there are lots of timeout errors/other errors relating to i2c_designware and MSFT timeouts. However from booting Fedora Rawhide (with 5.9.0-rc5) those seem to be gone and the trackpad worked. So maybe that might be sorted from the linux side.

However I believe there is something wrong in the acpi interface with the BIOS that needs to be sorted from Lenovo's side as the brightness keys don't register at all using acpi-listen and reading other threads here, Lenovo employees suggest that it's a tweak that needs to be made in the BIOS

I will try to update my kernel to see the improvements.

@ThePiGuy How do you update the BIOS? Need Windows?

I only have Linux, Windows I have it in a virtualbox.

@edugsdf  Yes unfortunately it appears that the firmware isn't distributed through fwupd (at least it didn't appear to be when I last looked) and therefore I think windows is required.

I haven't got Linux properly installed at the moment as the issues are slightly too bad to use it daily

As an update to this, I am currently running Arch (kernel 5.9.1) and the trackpad is definitely fixed now (effectively making the laptop usable on Linux for me).

Sleep does also work, however it must be initiated from the linux install (e.g. systemctl suspend or through the power menu) rather than with the power button/lid closure.

Other than that, the only FN keys that work are volume and lock, the others (the most important being brightness) do not yet work.

In the dmesg there is a very persistent acpi_irq RIP: IRQ 9 disabled which may have something to do with it?

Wow! Very good!

MX Linux does not yet have the 5.9.1 kernel

I upgraded to kernel 5.8.0-2, but it didn't work.

For that I needed to update the version of NVIDIA drivers to 450.66, but in CSGO Steam for linux it started to freeze screens and slow down.

I'll wait a little longer for MX to update to 5.9, or maybe I'll try to use PopOS from system76.

But I really like MX Linux.

Thank you for sharing your experiences! It will certainly help everyone a lot!

20-21 update (May 2021) Fedora 34 with Gnome 40:

Trackpad

    • works

FN keys

    • sound control (F1-F4) working
    • reload, touch pad, aeroplane, lock (F5-F7, F9) - working
    • back lit control (space) - working (fortunately not system dependant)
    • camera control,  (F8, F10) - not working,
    • brightness control (F11-F12) - not working, this one is the most frustrating

so.. most of FN keys working (however, not the 2 out of 5 most used). IRQ9 still a problem.

Nvidia MX250

    • works with X
    • allegedly works with Wayland (didn't get there yet)

Thermals

    • system runs hot with or without load

(to be continued)

I've got a different laptop (IdeaPad 5 15ITL05), so not all the hot keys are the same. But like yours, the volume keys work and the brightness keys do not, despite Mint having good Lenovo support and me going through multiple kernels. (For me, the screen-lock and external-monitor keys don't work either.) I'd wanted Arch, but laptop support was better with Mint.) So I suspect this is indeed a bug on the Lenovo side. I hate trying to update the BIOS, though -- don't want to mess with it if it's mostly working.
