Linux: Fn-keys not working - Thinkpad E14 AMD Gen 2

2020-07-15, 21:43 PM

Dear all,

recently I bought a nice lenovo thinkpad E14 (with AMD). Installation of Manjaro MATE went pretty flawless and everything is running pretty smoothly.
However the fn keys are not working as expected:

working:

  • fn + space is controling keyboard backlight
  • fn + Esc is enabling FnLock, although the status LED is not enabled/disabled

not working

  • all fn keys from F1 to F12 have no effect

When trying to edit a shortcut (e.g. volume up) in MATE keyboard shortcuts it is immediately set to "Wake up" when pressing the fn key (it is handled as an usual button).

I would really appreciate when owners of an E14 could let me know when they solved the issue or any other general help.

Thanks in advance!

Re:Linux: Fn-keys not working - Thinkpad E14 AMD Gen 2

Hello, i got the exact same problem. I have Lenovo E15 gen 2 with Ryzen 5 4500u.
The functions keys started working, when i installed KDE environment on Fedora. Before it was with Gnome and they didn't work. I also tried Linux Mint 20 Cinamon, which is with Gnome and function keys didn't work.
Not sure where is the problem.
Hope this help.

Can you run acpi_listen in a terminal and hit each of the function keys that do not work correctly and provide the output, that would determine if the BIOS is sending the key inputs to the Linux kernel or not.

Hi @DaveOber,

thanks for your quick reply. Sure, here's the output:

F2:   ^[OQ

F3:   ^[OR

F4:   ^[OS

F5:   ^[[15~

F6:   ^[[17~

F7:   ^[[18~

F8:   ^[[19~

F9:   ^[[20~

F10:   ^[[21~

F12:   ^[[24~

F1 and F11 is reserved for help and fullscreen.

Theses usual F-keys are working as expected. But when I hit Fn + F-keys there is no output.

Hi there, I can confirm this behaviour on a new Lenovo E15 Gen 2. No outputs for function keys Fn using acpi_listen... Running latest Manjaro stable Release.

Same with my Thinkpad E14 AMD Gen 2. Running Arch Linux, I tried Kernel 5.8 rc5, same problem. Makes the otherwise great system rather annoying to use. I would be greatful for any solutions!
Also my touchpad hangs from time to time....

Hi! I have the exact same problem. The weird thing... the keys used to work after the installation of Manjaro and some initial adjustments... Could someone help?

Please provided the BIOS release you are running so I can check if this has been reported as this is probably a BIOS issue

Just updated to BIOS 1.07 on an E15 AMD Gen 2. However no Function keys at all. Running kernel 5.6.16 here.

I will try KDE with a live CD to see if it is a kind of desktop environment dependency playing a role here?

Some time ago I had some issues when using XFCE on a Linux box regarding function keys...
