Re:Linux: Fn-keys not working - Thinkpad E14 AMD Gen 2

I returned mine. I guess there will be workarounds and a BIOS fix somewhere in the next year, but I don't really want to count on that. I guess the ThinkPads aren't that Linux friendly after all.

For reference you are bundling all machines with the Thinkpad name together, the E series has never been formally supported for Linux and we do attempt to make things work with the limited resources we have for those users that wish to run Linux on them, the support for Linux is currently limited  to the T, P and X series machines (with a few exceptions) and we have started to include a few from the L series line.  Check the supported list of machines and Distributions tested on at www.lenovo.com/linux

Re:Linux: Fn-keys not working - Thinkpad E14 AMD Gen 2

Hi,

The E15 is one of the rare Thinkpad noteboks with AMD Ryzen and a "big" 15" display and specially the display size is a must for me (also the numeric keypad).

As a developer myself I don't understand why it is so complicated to support Linux in the year 2020.

Even that Lenovo has a "brand" and history on this.

Very disappointing, but ok, must be accepted.

I honor your support and help efforts, but this forces me to return the product.

Thanks and

Regards

Someone posted that it worked on KDE.  Did you test it on KDE?

I'd tested on KDE, yes (no go). AFAIK the problem is on the bios/driver/kernel level.

Yes, I tested:

  • Manjaro KDE 20.0.3
  • Ubuntu 20.04
  • Ubuntu 18.04
  • Debian10.4.0
  • Kubuntu 20.04
  • Fedora Workstation 32
  • PopOS 20.04

With Manjaro I tried nearly all available Kernel versions up to 5.8.

Nothing worked for the FN keys.

At least I was able to apply the AMDGPU trick which was mentioned before in this thread and was able to change the display brightness by setting values 0..255 in /sys/...

But not with the KDE GUI settings or by the FN keys.

Sadly, I returned now the E15 back.

Maybe I will go now with an native Linux notebook like Slimbook (tried today the one of a friend and really liked it) or a Tuxedo,

Regards.

I got tit to work with a little help of reddit! At least somehow. You have to suspend your system (systemctl suspend) then wake up again, then they work. Anyone who has not returns their machine please try it. I have absolutely no idea why this works. I talked to my vendor and they refused to take back my machine so I am stuck with it :/

Yes it is working after suspending your laptop. Noticed this already.

I hope that lenovo will fix this issue. It seems to be a simple bios issue because actually it's working perfectly.

Re:Linux: Fn-keys not working - Thinkpad E14 AMD Gen 2

Hello,

I have a Lenovo computer running Linux,  the function keys work great and are mapped to the same action as under Windows.  For mine for example F1 mutes the sound, F7 toggles airplane mode and so forth....  If I hold the Fn key down then press a function key, the software does whatever the Function key is set up to do....

Now for a survey, how many of you having function key issues are booting BIOS using LEGACY mode??

I boot using UEFI mode.

If you want to switch this mode you MUST, uninstall Linux and any other OS you dual/triple/quad boot with.  Then reset BIOS to UEFI mode, select factory default settings and my bios has a button for "Optimize BIOS settings for the OS."  Then install your OS suite with UEFI mode active.

If you did not reinstall ALL OS's after switching BIOS to Legacy, you will have driver problems.  BIOS is like train tracks, USA standard gage trains don't run on meter gage tracks and so forth....  A system with Legacy must have all OS first installed using Legacy, and the same for UEFI.

Now for Linux versions, Lenovo has announced providing support and shipping machines loaded with FEDORA Linux.  I use FEDORA WORKSTATION install image, and my function keys have never been an issue.  I use the default Gnome desktop from Fedora.  KDE seems to work too.  Fedora does not use X-windows engine for the desktop programs.

Try Fedora and please post whether it works better or not!   (getfedora.org)

Respectfully,

Usedtoberich

Keyboard input is handled by libinput and the kernel, unless Fedora does some fancy patches on their own, it won't really make a difference. As for legacy mode, I do not know which model you use, but the AMD E14/15 models only use UEFI, there is no lagacy mode any more. I own several other thinkpads and on all of them the hotkeys work without any problem with any distro I tried. It is specifically an E14/15 AMD problem, I am quite sure of this.
