Linux on a T500.

2008-11-01, 17:44 PM

Hello all.

I bought a T500 laptop and installed Suse 11.0 on it. (I deleted Windows. No dual-partition for me.)

It works quite well, except for the discrete graphics card (ATI Mobility 3650).

The system graphics look fine using a Vesa driver (I assume this driver uses the integrated graphics chip).

But turning on 3D acceleration or turning the resolution too high caused the system to crash.

Then I had to reboot and I couldn't load the graphical user interface. It just booted up to a command-line interface.

So I reinstalled SUSE. (I realize at this point I could have tried using sax2 to switch the graphics mode).

Next I tried installing ATI's catalyst driver. And in the bios I switched to discrete display and turned off switchable graphics.

This got the ati chip working once - with very slow graphics and a horrible refresh rate.

Then after rebooting it couldn't load the graphical user interface and it just booted up to a command line again.

Can someone recommend a nice open source driver that might work?

And.. has anyone else out there tried linux with a t500? Everything works beautifully except for this graphics issue. :-P   But nice web browsing via firefox, nice youtube viewing, and it works on that video chat site Stickam

I don't care how much effort it takes to get linux working properly, anything's better than settling for windows.  :-D

I have just finishing installing Fedora 10 preview on my new W500 which is quite similar to the T500.  The radeonhd open source driver there works well with no problems so far.  The final version of Fedora 10 will be released on Nov.25.

Thanks for the response.

You've got a W500? I want one. :-) Your graphics card has more memory than mine.

Anyhow, did you have to change any settings in the bios to get the card to work? (ie. turning off graphics card switching.)

Yes, I had to set in the BIOS either integrated graphics (Intel) or discrete graphics (ATI).  The ATI Radeon 3650HD is working well so far with the radeonhr driver on Fedora 10 preview.

When I first installed I was brought to init3 only, so had to build an xorg.conf and then issue init5 to get a graphical interface, but that wasn't too hard.
