No sound from speakers using Realtek ALC287

2021-01-18, 11:08 AM

The problem with Internal speakers and Lenovo Legion 7 15IMH05 (Realtek ALC287). Headphones work somehow ok, but speakers don't. I tried different kernels, all possible hdajackretask configurations, ALSA settings, Sound Open Firmware, nothing works.

There is a related bug on bugzilla: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=208555

Doesn't look like something is changing so far. It's quite weird, because as far as I know, Lenovo cares about Linux support.

I can provide any additional details and participate in testing.

According to specs, looks like the codec is recognized wrongly and in fact it's Realtek ALC3306.

Still no updates and no sound though.

Likely the issuer (discussed in that kernel bug), are the amplifier chips on the internal speakers. Thus, Lenovo's help would go a long way toward fixing this.

Would it be possible to post the dmesg right after booting so I can see what drivers and firmware it attempts to use to initialize the audio

Next have you tried black listing the snd_hda_intel modules so it uses the next one on the list for the driver, the list can be found doing lspci -k, if there are more than two and blacklisting the first does not work also blacklist the second driver so it picks the sof driver.  Many of the newer sound cards need to use the sof driver and firmware just trying to rule that out.  Look at dmesg for lines containing snd_  to see if it makes any changes in the output.

blacklisting snd_hda_intel, I'm getting:

...

[    2.197965] snd_soc_skl 0000:00:1f.3: DSP detected with PCI class/subclass/prog-if info 0x040380
[    2.262995] thermal thermal_zone9: failed to read out thermal zone (-61)
[    2.311745] usb 1-14: New USB device found, idVendor=8087, idProduct=0026, bcdDevice= 0.02
[    2.311745] usb 1-14: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=0, SerialNumber=0
[    2.380813] sof-audio-pci 0000:00:1f.3: DSP detected with PCI class/subclass/prog-if info 0x040380

...

And Dummy Output in PulseAudio.

so it sounds like the sof-audio-pci is the driver maybe in use, are there any other sof-audio lines in the dmesg output

No, I can't see any other mentions of sof / snd:

https://gist.github.com/nerox8664/1f640474c548c737281f8dc5da0ed850

Kernel version: 5.10.13-arch1-1

lspci -k shows:

```
00:1f.3 Audio device: Intel Corporation Comet Lake PCH cAVS
Subsystem: Lenovo Device 3826
Kernel modules: snd_hda_intel, snd_soc_skl, snd_sof_pci
```

Did you blacklist the snd_soc_skl module in addition to the snd_hda_intel. Both need to be blacklisted in order for the sof driver to be the active one.
