P1 Gen 4 Linux support

2021-10-05, 12:54 PM

Dear community and Lenovo members,

I want to kindly ask you about plans to support Linux (Fedora in my case) distros for P1 Gen 4.

Will this happen? Any feedback from the existing users?

As far as I understand, this machine is relatively new and that is the reason, why I cannot find users' opinions yet.

I am about to buy a new laptop for my programming needs and install the Fedora distro on top of it, but it's kinda black-boxed.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks!

The P1G4 is in scope to be supported for Fedora currently we are working with Fedora developers on the nouveau driver support for the newer Ampere series graphic cards that this system has available.

Thanks for the reply, Dave! Is it possible to disable nVidia card for now (until it is properly supported) and use Intel's integrated one instead?

I have been using mine with the proprietery driver with very few issues.  The question is which GPU card were you thinking of the A3000, A4000 and A5000 seem to be fine but the GTX 3080 I have some issues with that are being worked on.

Dave,my desired config includes "NVIDIA® T1200 with Max-Q Design 4 GB GDDR6". Cheapest one, since I don't plan to use it for entertainment. Rest of config includes i7 11800H, 32Gb RAM, 1Tb SSD, 16.0" WQUXGA (3840x2400) IPS, matt.

Another thing I just noticed, there is an X1 Extreme Gen 4 laptop. They look identical, except for Graphic cards.

You may not have issues with that Graphics card as it is based on the Turing GPU and not the newer Ampere.  The X1 Extreme is basically the same except for Graphics card availability

As another side note - the latest Fedora has audio issues on the P1G4, as it needs to pick up SOF firmware v1.9 which was released just yesterday.

I have a bug open with Fedora for it, and it's being integrated into F35. In the meantime it's pretty easy to clone the sof-bin repo and install the updated FW yourself as a workaround.
