Refund on Microsoft Tax?

2009-03-16, 4:43 AM

Hello,

So I have purchased a new Thinkpad T400 and am awaiting it's arrival in the mail.

My question is, how many people here have had success with trying to get back their MS tax on their Lenovo systems?

I found this link on Slashdot.org http://tech.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/08/28/1822227

Which links back to the original article here:  http://www.abclinuxu.cz/clanky/pr/abclinuxu.cz-vyplatil-nahradu-za-licenci-ms-windows-misto-lenovo-cr?page=1

It is about a person who bought a machine loaded with Vista who didn't want it and refused the EULA and went to get his refund on the Vista license.

Looks like after a bit of a battle Lenovo refunded him the equivalent of 130USD for the Vista license.

Has anyone else had any luck with this?

There was no choice to purchase this laptop without the Vista preinstall nor was there any option to buy a linux preinstall like when I purchase a T61 for my mother last summer.

The person this laptop is for will be using Ubuntu and has zero use for Vista.

So, anyone go through this yet? Looks like I will be in the coming weeks.

ya, i dunno man.  I was going to do it, but it seems like a lot of hassle and hurts lenovo more than MS.  Plus I was only expecting to get like $30 out of them according to other articles I've seen.  I decided I didn't mind having vista, too.

But I like the principle of it.  free software 4evar

Yeah, I don't specifically "like" the idea of "hurting" lenovo but the person who I purchased this unit for probably wouldn't mind getting the 130$ refund back. Lenovo offered $130 to another person and if that is the price they have set then that is the price.

I see it this way, Lenovo, under a year ago, did offer laptops with linux preloaded. They stopped this economic reasons presumably (not enough sales to justify the required support?) but maybe it was because of MS strong arm tactics.

Whatever it is they could at least offer a no OS option for those who would like a choice.

On top of this, I am an educator who does all the tech work in a small elementary school and next year we will be purchasing Dell netbooks for all of our 6th grade studen. They won't just be purchased for our building, they will be fore several other schools in other towns within our district.

We are moving towards opensource in general and I don't want to pay for something I don't/won't/can't use.

The educational open source software we have now blows away all the previous software that we have paid several thousands of dollars for in the past.

Do bear in mind that what was possible in Czech Republic is not necessarily possible here...

This is true.

Though the cost difference with the T61 from over the summer with SUSE was certainly more than thirty dollars I believe.

For the person who this computer is for, thirty dollars is still not a trivial amount.
