Re: SL400 running Ubuntu / Linux

The output you list leads me to believe that libdvdcss isn't decrypting your dvds properly.  I've had no problems.  I set the region to one on my dvd drive and most dvds just play.

I do have to set -vo x11 or vo sdl because under 8.04.1 the default -vo xv does not work properly.

Re: SL400 running Ubuntu / Linux

please let me know if you are able to get more than the 1024x768 since I want to try and "force it" to a better resolution (haven't tried since I am afraid of "burning" the display)

That's not been an issue for me. The live DVD booted right into 1280X800 on my SL400. Could it be your graphic card?

Hi Nebcanuck,

THanks for the reply, looking at my invoice from lenovo, here is the graphics card I have

44C2781 SBB INT GRAPH MED ACCEL 4500

and this is the result of running  lspci in the terminal

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)

Could you please confirm:

if you are using ubuntu 8.10 (or the live distro of ubuntu 8.10)

if you have the integrated Intel GMA 4500 or the Nvidia

if your lcd display is the same as mine (I have the discription in the post just above)

thanks in advance

Re: SL400 running Ubuntu / Linux

I am indeed running Ubuntu 8.10, fully updated (including pre-release and backport repos).

I also have the same graphics card as you.

It's worth noting that for some reason, I had issues with the graphics card when I first got the computer and installed Ubuntu. It wouldn't recognize the card properly, and that caused problems. I couldn't use any desktop effects, and when I put a game full screen (eg Frozen Bubbles) it didn't work properly.

After trying to fiddle with settings, I gave up and moved on to other distros, including Fedora, OpenSUSE, Mandriva, and even Ubuntu 9.04, all of which worked fine with the graphics card.

Oddly, when I got frustrated with little quirks in the others, I decided to return to Ubuntu for a second try, and the graphics card worked perfectly without any tweaking this time.

With that in mind, I might encourage you to try re-installing Ubuntu 8.10 to see if that makes a difference.

Re: SL400 running Ubuntu / Linux

Hi,

I just solved the problem of my resolution issues, before my xorg.conf file was configured this way:

 Section "Screen"
        Identifier      "Default Screen"
        Monitor         "Configured Monitor"
        Device          "Configured Video Device"
        SubSection "Display"
                Virtual 1024 1536
        EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier      "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

note that virtual has it's max at 1024! but I guess the correct should be:

 Section "Screen"
        Identifier      "Default Screen"
        Monitor         "Configured Monitor"
        Device          "Configure Video Device"
        SubSection "Display"
                Virtual 1280 800
        EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Driver          "intel"
        Identifier      "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

This post on ubuntu forum had helped: video

now only remaining issue (for me) on this SL400: bright and volume control, and can't play encoded Dvd's. The first one there is a patch/driver out there that can fix it, but I guess I will just wait on 9.04 release.

u can run 9.04 today, u know.  we're already at alpha 5 or so.  I've been running it since the start, and it's only been improvement since 8.10.  It just takes a 'sudo update-manager -d'

I got my refurbed SL400 a few weeks ago and have been playing with OSX86, Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.04 on it. Ubuntu works wonderfully for me, looks great, and is really fast in comparison to OSX and Windows 7. the only things that don't work are the volume button and the screen brightness only has 2 levels. But neither of those are deal killers and from what I understand are being worked on by people more knowledgable about that stuff than I.

Re: SL400 running Ubuntu / Linux

there's a simple driver for brightness keys and volume controls.  It all works for me.

http://github.com/tetromino/lenovo-sl-laptop/tree/master

The fixes won't make it into jaunty.  I'm tracking the kernel bug associated with the brightness problem.  The kernel dev says it will be fixed in 2.6.30 probably and jaunty's got 2.6.28.  Btw, I've been running jaunty alphas since the repos opened.

Just learn to compile stuff and copy to the modules tree and run depmod.  It seems less painful than waiting to me.

The problem with x4500MHD video is mostly fixed in the newest intel drivers.  I can do compiz DRI2, GEM and UXA just fine. Pretty fast, too.  This should make it into jaunty.

Btw, how well does osx86 work for you?

Re: SL400 running Ubuntu / Linux

I've got the nvidia 9300M which so far has worked perfectly, though I haven't gotten a chance to try the HDMI output yet.

Thanks for the link to the driver I'll give it a shot.

As for OSX, everything works except:

Network - there are no current drivers for either the Intel 5100AGN or the Atheros 242x chip. I have the Atheros in mine.use the RTL1000 driver for the wired ethernet.

Sound - the sound looks to be a Conexant Intel HDA chip. There are some folks with the same chip in their laptop but probably different ID codes. So while it looks like there are drivers that should work, some tweaking of them may be required. I haven't had the time to roll my own drivers for the SL to see how that works out.

No idea about doing audio over HDMI with the NVidia drivers at this point either.

Touchpad - it works, but tapping and scrolling doesn't out of the box. It looks like it should be possible with some tweaking of current drivers and settings, but again haven't had enough time to look further into this.

The "web cam" does work though!

I don't have the finerprint reader so I don't know about that, but I doubt it.
