T14 AMD Gen 2 5850U battery drain in standby (Linux)

2021-09-10, 19:22 PM

Hello,

Having the same exact issue as previous thread regarding t14 gen1 standby power issues. Since that thread is locked, mod asked me to start a new thread for latest gen.

System:

T14 Gen 2 5850U (20XK001AUS)

Kernel:

5.14.2

BIOS:

1.09

- Sleep mode set to linux and always on usb in bios is turned off

Batenergy tracking output (https://github.com/equaeghe/batenergy):

Sep 10 19:57:13 thinkpad systemd-sleep[6438]: Entering sleep state 'suspend'...
Sep 11 00:09:22 thinkpad systemd-sleep[6438]: System returned from sleep state.
Sep 11 00:09:22 thinkpad systemd-sleep[6465]: Currently on battery.
Sep 11 00:09:22 thinkpad systemd-sleep[6465]: Duration of 0 days 4 hours 12 minutes sleeping (suspend).
Sep 11 00:09:22 thinkpad systemd-sleep[6465]: Battery energy change of -5.6 % (-2910 mWh) at an average rate of -1.33 %/h (-692 mW).
Sep 11 00:09:22 thinkpad systemd[1]: systemd-suspend.service: Deactivated successfully.
Sep 11 00:09:22 thinkpad systemd[1]: Finished System Suspend.

I really hope this can be fixed because at this rate I lose about 20-30% battery in a single night.

P.S: will update full nights drain tomorrow.

Also the mic mute LED on key F4 stays on even when the mic is live. No way to turn it off, Same issue as previous gen t14.

I don't own any gen2 machines, and won't buy any, in fact, I won't buy Lenovo products anymore until they get serious.

However, let's try the workarounds we did with gen1 first.

1) Charge your battery to full

2) Plug the power cable and reboot to BIOS

3) Use disable build-in battery option to disconnect the battery

4) Drink a tea or so :) and wait for >1m ( better a bit longer )

5) Plug AC cable, fire up the machine, and go to BIOS again.

6) Be sure every device is enabled in BIOS.

7) Reboot to OS

Now you can do some testing. Suspend for >30M , better >1h without any other optimizations.

Do the same but use for example powertop --auto-tune + disable WOL.

This stuff is very time-consuming and not sure you want to do that, but Lenovo won't help you.

I know it does, I had a drain of 1.86W/h on my P14s...

OK. Care to test S0ix ?

For that change power to Windows 10 in BIOS.

I don't know *if* Lenovo fixed bugs are still present in gen1 BIOS, so you need to test something else first.

Boot into OS with S0ix set, then close the LID, wait a bit, open the LID.

If it takes forever, append iommu=pt to your kernel CMD.

Reboot now. Once back into OS, open terminal and fire:

dmesg | grep -i tsc

If you find any unstable tsc message, append tsc=nowatchdog to your kernel CMD.

After you did that, shutdown the box, not reboot and power back up.

I don't know your BIOS TABLES so you can experiment with and without acpi_osi=Linux appended.

DO the same tests with and without optimizations and see what you get.

My P14s is around 0.32 W/h average on S0ix.

Hi @agnosticon

I'm so frustrated that the same battery issues seen on the G1 platforms are showing up on the G2. I'm escalating this right away with the firmware team and I'm following up with the product team too - this is unacceptable.

I myself haven't got any of the G2 platforms. We've had a delayed Linux enablement due to Wifi component issues - but I wasn't expecting to see the same battery drain problems again. I'm beyond disappointed that we're seeing the same issues again on these platforms and will do everything to get it fixed ASAP.

For the mic mute problem - that seems to be a kernel regression but I'm having trouble tracking down and it's somewhat strange. The firmware team can't reproduce (they've shown me video's) but I'm seeing the problem on my system. I'm discussing that issue with the AMD engineers currently but it's proving strangely illusive to get to the root cause.

Thanks for creating the new thread. I'll update when I hear from the FW team.

Mark

Mark,

Thank you and please keep us posted in this thread, a lot of people with g2 are having the same issues.

Thanks

So... The battery dies in 3 nights if laptop is suspended at 100% battery.

If you guys can't fix this, please let us know so we can sell this piece of crap and get something that actually supports Linux better.
