Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

A kernel patch that fixes this makes sense though - the USB 3.1 controller is never really powered off if the "Always on USB" option is enabled. It needs to stay powered on because devices you'll plug into your laptop need to negociate the amount of power they can take in.

How the kernel patch fixes the issue, if I read it correctly, is that it forces the power state of the controller to D3cold (the most power efficient) while shutting down.

I'd wager it's not the default behavior, because you can likely expect that shutting down a machine means all its devices turn off. But in the case of "Always on USB", the USB controller is kept on because you WANT it on to charge devices; but since it's never fully uninitialized, so it draws more power than it should.

Long story short, yes, it's plausible a kernel patch will fix the standby drain while "Always on USB" is enabled! It's no guarantee, but it's plausible.

Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

I have usb allways on = off... and still have drain on standby. Also with complete shutdown drain exists... and if You are on 1.30 BIOS it is a massive drain.

To my understanding...there are at least 2 power problems: 1) on standby 2) on Shutdown. The 1st one seems plausible that a kernel patch will solve it. The 2nd ... I really doubt it...

Please share your toughts on this...

Same, we have all laptops with "usb allways on" turned off.

I have spoken to my manager and advised we initiate return of the devices as this becomes more problematic than I thought initially: people take fully charged laptop with them on a trip and upon opening it a day later it has already lost ~20% of the battery. They put it in S3 and it drains battery like the machine is idling.

I have messaged support, but they are pretty useless and keep repeating the mantra of "update the drivers" and "check the device manager". Saying "there is no such thing as a 'device manager'" breaks some kind of a scripted dialog and "support" person gets lost.

If you are in EU, feel free to send me a message, collective action might be more efficient in bringing Lenovo to their senses.

Hi Mark,

I got here via the sidebar - I started this other thread about this same issue, maybe they should be consolidated.

Also, it seems that 1.30, presumably with this issue still present, has just made it to LVFS, if possible it may make sense to revert it so it doesn't bite more people.

this is weird action by lenovo, i wonder how many laptops it can affect in an enterprise deployment.

guys, anyone can confirm this exact issue on t14s amd gen1 ? i want to add a battery section to archwiki.

nvm: updating t14 page.

ps: please correct me where needed: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lenovo_Thinkpad_T14_(AMD)_Gen_1#Battery_Issues

Can confirm P14s and X13... T14s is likely to be affected as well, but I would still check with someone who actually owns one.

I can confirm problem with T14s AMD. It's much better with disabled USB-Always-On, but still persists on BIOS 1.29.

Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

Some results from the firmware team (not official e-cert result) are:

We have verify five machine about this issue. Wi-Fi not connect with as below five machine.

Three machine (1.30) : from 2/25 18:00 to 2/26 8:55, battery power is about 98% - 99%.

Two machine (1.29): from  2/25 18:00 to 2/26 8:55, battery power is about 98% - 99%.

We will connect Wi-Fi to verify again.

“Sleep state” item set to “Linux” and “Secure Boot” item set to “Disable” on BIOS setup.

I'm looking at reproducing this myself on my system as a sanity check (I've not really done any systematic testing on it, I switch between machines and what I'm doing on them too much). I'm digging into their test environment too - something isn't matching up right now.

I know it seems peculiar that 1.30 is back on LVFS. The reason is that it was originally pulled unrelated to the battery issue, but related to some issues with LVFS updates (I think they goofed on the versioning, but I'd have to check my notes). They've fixed that - so that's why it's posted again; and the firmware team are not seeing the battery drain you guys are seeing.

Thank you Mark for the update.

It's weird that they cannot reproduce the battery issue.

No matter the distribution I use, I have a huge drain in sleep and a noticeable drain even powered off (so this is not a distribution issue anymore when powered off).

If I charge it completely and shut it down, it's down to 0% 3 days later... So pretty much unuseable machine.

Is there something we can provide the team so they can finally fix it now ?

Hi

I confirm this issue on my t14s amd gen 1. Using Gentoo Linux with 5.11 kernel, Standby set to Linux and secure boot disabled.

I'm losing about 30% per day in S3 suspend. I also recompiled the kernel with the proposed patch which did not solve the issue.
