Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

2021-02-26, 19:12 PM

“Sleep state” item set to “Linux” and “Secure Boot” item set to “Disable” on BIOS setup.

Couple of differences:

- Secure Boot is enabled.

- The issue I've encountered is about discharge from ~ 50% to zero  while powered "off" for ~ 1 day - not S3 sleep.  Wasn't explicit in the firmware team's message although by the numbers they gave it also looks like power-off is what they did too.

T14, 4750U, Fedora 33, Crucial 16GB memory stick and Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD.

Reverting to 1.29 prevented the issue from showing up again.

We have verify five machine about this issue. Wi-Fi not connect with as below five machine.

Three machine (1.30) : from 2/25 18:00 to 2/26 8:55, battery power is about 98% - 99%.

Two machine (1.29): from  2/25 18:00 to 2/26 8:55, battery power is about 98% - 99%.

We will connect Wi-Fi to verify again.

“Sleep state” item set to “Linux” and “Secure Boot” item set to “Disable” on BIOS setup.

Well, I read this as "we have disabled WiFi / SecureBoot and unable to reproduce".

Can the testing be performed:

  1. With WiFi turned on
  2. With SecureBoot enabled, ideally provisioned with a custom KEK.

(minor digression) Has anyone tried enrolling their own MOK on Ryzen-based Lenovo laptops? Any difference compared to the Intel platform?..

On my T14s AMD, Fedora, 5.10.17, I cannot confirm excessive battery drain in power-off state.

BIOS 1.29, Secure boot, WiFI on, USB always-on off, Linux standby (hopefully we'll see modern standby / S0ix on AMD in future).

I'll monitor standby, which this thread was originally about as far as I can see, closely over the next few days.

v5.10.17 is rather fresh one. Could you try to boot with v5.10.13 and check again?

I would gladly update to 5.10.17, but it is not packaged even in Debian Sid.

5.10.19 was released yesterday, .17 is already 10 days old, Methusalem basically ;).

At first glance I don't see anything in the changelogs between 13 and 17 that are even closely related to Renoir or AMD S3 setup.

If you're not using secure boot (or are prepared to use mokutil --disable-validation) you can easily build your own kernels in Debian via kernelpackage. On Renoir it should be done within a few minutes and result in a nice Debian .deb to install.

If feasible, can you upgrade to 1.30?  Or were you on 1.30 before and downgraded back to 1.29?

Someone has just replied in another topic confirming the issue on v5.11.X...

I meant it doesn't matter which dot release between .13 and .17 you are using, there's very likely nothing in there that magically fixes the battery drain issue for me. Linux has very good commit messages and I glanced over every single one that mentioned AMD.

Also, the question was whether T14s users hit the same problem in power-off state, which I can deny. 100% charge after 8 hours of being shut-down.

I wanted to confirm whether there's a difference between 1.29 and 1.30 on my system. Checked twice if there's battery drain in powered-off state. Will now check on 1.30.

That's something! So we have a system that was never updated to v1.30 and does not experience drain when powered off.

What about S3, do you see a battery drain when system is "sleeping"?
