Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

2021-03-04, 9:21 AM

Hi,

I resolve battery drain in power-off state by disabling "LID sensor" in BIOS. If LID senzor was enabled, than I get about 14% power drain by night. I have T14 with AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 4750U with installed Fedora 33. I hope this problem will be resolved with BIOS update, because LID sensor is very useful. If you need more information I will be happy to help.

Thanks for the tip, but where exactly is the "LID sensor" property? I can't easily find it in X13 BIOS.

@MarkRHPearson , can you pass the information re. lid sensor to the H/W team so they can verify if it indeed affects power consumption?

guys, regarding disabling lid sensor: it appears to me that this in fact “solves the problem” of battery drain.

i had been running laptop for 2-3 days and a battery dropped from 96% to 94%; maybe i used laptop for some minute in a battery mode (not ac connected).

t14. only linux boot system. bios 1.30. but let me confirm again after 3 days of laptop being powered down.

Thanks for the heads-up! I've just disabled the lid sensor (BIOS 1.29, Fedora 32, Kernel 5.10.19-100) and will report in a few days on the status. In the T14 BIOS the option to disable the sensor is located under Config -> Power -> Lid Sensor

Unfortunately T14s (1.29) does not have this setting

I confirm it's there for the T14 (1.29).

Will report whether it makes any difference.

@jd_user - I've forwarded the information about the lid sensor to the BIOS team .

As an update on my testing results:

 - I confirmed that by dropping back to 1.29 EC/BIOS my drain in power off becomes minimal (0.4Wh in 17 hours)

 - I've been running a test update with 1.29 BIOS & 1.30 EC and I also have minimal drain there (0.1 Wh in 19 hours)

FWIW I have lid sensor enabled.

The suspend side of things is being worked on too - there is some progress there, but not a solution yet.

Mark

This is great news!! not sure how intel equivalents behave but 0.1 in 19 hours is very acceptable to me

Well, your results Mike doesn't look like what I remember.

I'll test again these days powering off. I usually power it off and leave it connected to AC since we posted the issue here.

By the way, what you mean by EC? Battery's Embedded Controller? is it possible to update/revert them independently from BIOS firmware?
