Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

2021-03-24, 12:47 PM

Power off in 1.29 is ~1 or 2% in 8 hours. That doesn't seem an issue for a daily use, which is why not so many t14 owners have realized about it I guess? In a week would be 10%

However when you're tired you just close the lid and suspend starts. That's why the only workaround I've found is to config hibernation after 1 hour suspended.

I repost this summary by @ srgLoop

So just to sum up the previous findings (please correct me if I'm wrong).

Regarding the standby

  • All T14 AMD models are in principle affected by the abnormal battery drain in standby
  • Some T14s AMD machines suffer from that as well, but some are not affected at all
  • As of now there is no known workaround to prevent this bug

Regarding the power off state

  • Battery drain when powered off is a bug that was introduced with the BIOS version 1.30 and affects
both T14 AMD and T14s AMD models.
  • Downgrading to the BIOS version 1.29 (or older) mostly solves the issue on T14 AMD (on T14s AMD too?)
  • Turning off the lid sensor in BIOS seems to be a workaround that helps with BIOS version 1.30

Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

I have just got my system back up and running which is great. I also got an update from the firmware team that they have reproduced the issue which hopefully is a big step forward - but I don't have any details yet on what they've found. I'll be digging into that with them.

Thanks

Mark

The issue is trivial to reproduce Mark... or you mean at source code?

Up until now they've not been able to see it themselves which admittedly has been strange; but I know my attempts have been a bit hit and miss. It looked like we were narrowing down on the conditions with the lid sensor being involved but I wasn't able to confirm it myself as I bricked the system.

I've got a word from a distant colleague that Lenovo is now accepting affected machines for a battery replacement. This totally makes sense given that laptops have been subjected to excessive discharge/re-charge cycles.

@MarkRHPearson , do you have any kind of issue code that needs to be mentioned to support? Or is this just a regular ticket with a link to this thread?

do you mean that some of t14/t14s/x13/p14s could be affected but not all of them?

honestly, after all these shenanigans i just want to return my machine (not just replace my battery; i'm having lots of other bugs, like bios splash screen long timeouts), but apparently they won't do it as i was using/testing everything out for more than 3-4 months.

Sorry, I genuinely haven't heard about a battery replacement program or any issue codes - if I can find out I'll let you know

Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

FWIW I am having the same one-percent-per-hour-drain issue on an AMD 4750 T14 (OCT 2020) on 1.30 BIOS with lid sensor enabled.

Running on current Arch Linux.

I wonder if late 2019 and / or early 2020's L14 machines (Intel CPU, Linux) are affected as well because I see similar symptoms on such a computer. Unfortunately, I am not in the position to drill further down on that machine as my employer might get really mad at me for doing so.

didn't encounter that someone mentioned l14 having issues, but as t14s, x13, p14s with amd cpu/gpus were reported having exact same behavior.

pretty much l14 amd as well could have the same, i presume that l14 units are not so popular as others, maybe that's why.

this is getting really weird, lenovo, seriously? 3 months since the last bios update.

so is there any maybe confirmation that the batteries are indeed faulty and needs replacement?
