Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

2020-11-09, 14:20 PM

I update the latest bios for thinapd x13/T14s amd version, from here, https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/jp/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x13-type-20uf-20ug/downloads/driver-list/component?name=BIOS%2FUEFI, after update one one fn function work(switch extern monitor mode). But the suspend battery drain still seems large.

I have tried:

  1. ubuntu 20.10 with kernel version 5.8
  2. latest bios version ,version 1.27, 3 Nov 2020.
  3. tlp installed and it work
  4. dmesg checked. Enter S3 mode successfully and log show it put all cpus offline when enter S3 mode.

I will check the batery percent tomorrow. But it seems not still change about 1% perhour now.

So, I think it maybe still  a bios problem. I think there are not much thing we can do now. Maybe a magical bios update version will fix it.

Hi - just a note that we are looking into this. Don't have root cause yet but I'll update when we find something (and hopefully the solution). It certainly looks like the power draw in suspend is higher than it should be

Great news indeed! My T14 would become truly awesome if this standby issue could be resolved. BTW, another glitch I noticed is that the USB-C docking stations do not seem to work very well with T14 AMD. In many cases the screen doesn't work or power via USB is not functioning or both. It takes several reconnects until at least the monitor and keyboard/mouse are properly connected. BIOS 1.27 seems to have partly addressed this issue, but I haven't noticed any improvements so far. I'm using Dell WD15, but I think that I've already seen people on the internet complaining about the same issues with different docks as well.

Well, I use a new thinkpad X13 amd version . But I see the BIOS is the same and the problem is also same. Is there same proble on intel version? If it is a amb bug and I prefer switch to another intel version thinkpad.

For me every time I reopen laptop next day say about 12 hours, I get battery critically low , bios chip sound :-D and all my progress is lost. It is quite frustrating.

Mint 20 Ulyana - Ubuntu focal. 5.9.8 Kernel. Stock BIOS - 1.25.

I feel like my drains are even faster that the rest.

Lolol, I flashed BIOS and updated to 1.27, left laptop at 9:40 ish UTC (assume 99% battery), I just left it without closing the lid, now is 14:47 UTC I am at 63%. So the only thing which would be off is screen going to sleep rest was spinning, since I didn't close the lead and it appears I am getting less drain with laptop on rather than standby :-D :-D :-D

Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

Hi,

We're still working through e-cert with the T14 AMD - we're looking at an issue when the power drain is ever so slightly high when it is turned off (it's really not terrible - just 0.3 W more than it should be).

The biggest thing is to make sure that S3 standby is being used (aka legacy). In the BIOS change the sleep mode from "Windows" to "Linux" as the AMD platform doesn't support S0ix yet (normally I'd recommend the opposite but in this case Legacy is better). That will hopefully help solve a lot of issues.

I need to check BIOS versions for you guys too, nudge me if I don't add that detail shortly.

Mark

Please post the expected drain (and the units) in S3 and how to measure it (window and linux) so we're all comparing apples to apples.
