Dear Linux Format,

First of all my compliments for your great magazine. I must honestly admit that I haven't got an abonnement because most of the articles goes
beyond my knowledge, or I don't want to go that deep in Linux. However, often I like to read  an article and then I buy it in my bookstore. Good for the bookstore and the visibility of the magazine.

Is it possible for you guys to make an article about the new issues with new Laptops?  Lenovo Thinkpad has doing well for years on Linux, and one year ago there was huge news that Lenovo will bring Linux to most of their new laptops.

I was about buying  a top laptop from Lenovo last year, when I noticed there are lots of issues going on with Lenovo and Linux. The biggest one is about huge battery drain during sleep (S3). The issues are completely ignored by the BIOS and Firmware team of Lenovo, and very loyal customers are angry and frustrated with a "TOP"  laptop that does not last a weekend, due to high battery drain)

Hope you guys can dig in this issue that affect most of the new Laptops, and perhaps also write some models that are not affected with this issue and is a 'best buy yet'. May this create some awareness for your readers (and Lenovo's engineering guys), that something is not right.

Wishing you the very best with the magazine!

Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

I signed up to the forums specifically for this thread, and also wanted to express my deep disappointment with the lack of priority that Lenovo appears to assign to this issue. I'm responsible for 6 ThinkPad purchases in my household and the way that this has (not) been handled when we're already getting Gen 2 refreshes is seriously shaking my confidence in the quality of T-series ThinkPads.

I recently got a P14s (AMD) for my partner and while I was aware that battery life in idle was pretty sucky, I was *not* aware that it doesn't live up to basic expectations for traveling / not requiring a plug literally all of the time. The only reason that I'm not returning this device is because the back-and-forth with customer support (emails, sending devices, etc.) would be more of a pain for my partner than the alternative. However, let it be said that I am not happy about this.

More people deserve to know before they purchase a device with this kind of shortcoming. To help with visibility, I left a pointer to this thread on the often-quoted (English-language) Notebookcheck articles for AMD-variant T14, P14s and T14s. Hopefully the upcoming tests for the Gen 2 models will shine a brighter light on this issue.

Hello all,

Not my area of expertise but ...is it feasible in any way alternative bios integration?? (i.e core_boot or libreboot)??

Please elaborate on this subject. If possible it would be an alternative to solve these issues with community help..??

Thanks

Not possible for the community, the AGESA code isn't open anymore, without it no way at all for us.

Even with an open AGESA code is complicated to add support ( proper support ) for a closed platform

Maybe someone can compile a few 'strong' opinions about the issue in Chinese.

Hopefully Mark is able to forward it to the management/bios/firmware team, highly likely they do not read English letters.

Make more "engineers" aware of the issue and how people feel about their 'work'.

Unlikely to help.

What helps is to make a lot of noise in the public.

Magazines, Youtube, Facebook, etc.. What a company never likes is 'bad press'.

Hello everyone,

I followed this thread also for a long time silently and like everyone else I'm disapointed and annoyed. I even bought a Windows 10 license to resolve the issue. Guess what - the issue still exists.

I've contacted the Lenovo support and tomorrow a technician will change the battery. I would love to see that this is the solution but it is more likely that the technician and I will become friends. ;-)

I encourage You to do the same to make this issue even more visible to Lenovo.

Greetings, Peter
