Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

I completely agree.

It's a wonderful machine, except for this really annoying issue that I hope will get fixed soon.

Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

Another bad thing I found. I buy a new small GaN quick charger but it cann't work on my thinkpad x13 amd version. I have tested 3 other laptops and they all work fine(720s-win10, t490s-win10, t490s-ubuntu20). I'm really pissed off right now because I've wasted so much time !!!!

I also found that there was no Linux version of the BIOS available for download, whereas the Intel version did. So why you put the amd version to the "Ubuntu Certification List" ???? It not about money. It about our time!!!

Another thing I found is that the latest bios version for thinkpad x13/t14 amd version change from 1.27 to 1.25???

So there is a bug with the 1.27 version, so did it go back???

I will never buy another THINKPad from AMD, and for the first time I have a bad impression of  ThinkPad!!!!

Again, I'm really, really angry that I wasted so much time just because this AMD version is not fully finished at all!!!!!

Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

No UEFI updates fixing the issue so far. I guess this is the last time I bought
a new Lenovo machine shortly after it appeared on the market.

My prior strategy of buying used leasing returns was far more efficient: The
laptops I got this way were of course not brand new, but they were much
cheaper and all the existing Linux issues were known. Of course, in this case
Lenovo earns nothing.

So yeah, I'm not sure if it is such a good strategy for Lenovo to keep T14 as it
is with an essentially broken standby and not fixing the issue in a timely manner.

Surely they can pull it off, but there will be a lot of disappointed customers like
myself, who will think three times before buying a new ThinkPad next time.
This way Lenovo will loose way more money as compared to what they need to
spend now to fix this bug ASAP.

I'm not really angry or outraged, just very much disappointed.

Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

Just a note that this is still being worked on - I don't have an update or ETA but it's not being ignored.

For anybody picking up this thread: do make sure you have the sleep mode set to "Linux" instead of "Windows". This changes between S3 (Legacy) and S0iX (Modern Standby) and S3 is required for suspend to work on this platform. This doesn't solve the higher power use but at least helps.

For the firmware updates - that is being worked on too. There was a mistake made by the firmware team with GUID's that took a little bit of confusion for them to resolve. I saw some more emails on it this morning and I think they've got it straightened up (they still had one outstanding question to confirm). Hopefully we'll get the new firmware up on LVFS soon (but it doesn't solve the power issue yet)

Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

I can confirm that BIOS 1.29 reliably fixes the lid issue. However, I'm not sure why the
machine has to wake up immediately when the lid gets opened. On my old T460p I could
actually open the lid without triggering a wake up. The sleep would end only upon pressing

Fn or the power button. But well, I guess this is not so important, as long as the old behavior
with a wake up being triggered by closing the lid is reliably fixed. Thanks.

At the moment I (and probably most other T14 users) would name the following two
deal-breaking bugs

  1. The battery drain bug we all "know and love"
  2. Huge issues with USB-C docking stations. I collected my experiences here, but from what I see on Reddit and in the
German thinkpad-forum.de, this problem equally affects Windows users and also those using Lenovo's USB-C docks.

IMHO until these two issues are fixed, one should really think twice before buying a T14 AMD. Yes, the machine is definitely
a beast in terms of the CPU power, but unless you plan to use it as a desktop replacement at home most of time, the two bugs
I mentioned will drive you crazy.

Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

Hello.

I own a P14s AMD that came with 1.27 Bios and I would like to report that I was not affected by lid issues or power cord issue. Sleep worked correctly with this bios version.

The battery drain was present when poweroff (had to turnoff USB always ON) which solved massive drain when off. The Sleep drain is present and waiting for fixing.

I am using Pop!_Os 20.10 and now have latest BIOS 1.29.

Not sure why P14s was not affected by lid issues?? As far as I know P14s and T14 are the same hardware wise... Might be OS related??!! System76 is also selling Ryzen Laptops and their support is updated on regular basis...

Also about the hardware the only thing that did not work off the box was fingerprint sensor that after updating lvs with fwupdmgr installed Prometheus drivers and all was working fine.

Hope Lenovo fixes the battery drain soon. This is a wonderful beast!

Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

I have to take back my criticism regarding the current lid behavior: Disabling the lid sensor in BIOS makes it actually behave exactly as I like it: Opening/closing the lid doesn't affect the standby state at all.  So in this respect everything is ow working as expected.

As far as the power cord issues are concerned I have to admit that I didn't experience anything like that so far, apart from the above mentioned USB-C docking irregularities. I own multiple USB-C power supplies, namely a 65W unit from Helpers Lab, a tiny 65W GaN model from Baseus, a 57W Apple unit and a 65W HP unit in addition to the Lenovo power supply shipped with my T14. All of them work flawlessly, i.e. my T14 always gets charged when attached. Perhaps the power supply bug is really specific to X13 or may be I've just been lucky with my device so far.

Thanks a lot for the tip about the workaround with disabling "USB always on"!

Battery drain in powered off state isn't noticable now on my T14s.

There is a new version of Bios 1.30, however power issues were not addressed

Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

I guess I spoke too soon. P14s powered off 97% batt  last night...and 77,8% after 18 hours. So this version is doing something about power... but for the worse!!

Can someone else confirm this?
