Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

An interesting story with stats..

ThinkPad sleep power consumption (Ryzen 7 CPU, wh consumption in sleep mode. Source: Energy Star):

ThinkPad T495 (20NJ, 2020) = 0.8
ThinkPad E15 Gen 3 (20YG, 2021) = 0.6
ThinkPad E14 Gen 3 (20Y7, 2021) = 0.7
ThinkPad E15 Gen 2 (20T8, 2020) = 0.7
ThinkPad E14 Gen 2 (20T6, 2020) = 0.6
ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 (2021) = 0.6
Lenovo ThinkBook 14s (2020) - 0.5

ThinkPad T14/P14s Gen 1 (2020) - 1.2
ThinkPad T14/P14s Gen 2 (2021) = 0.8

ThinkPad T14s Gen 1 (2020) = 1.6
ThinkPad T14s Gen 2 (2021) = 0.6

These stats tell us that Lenovo have already fixed the issue in gen 2! Let me emphasise that, LENOVO HAVE ALREADY FIXED THIS ISSUE.

So, why isn't the first gen fixed 9 months after release with a fixed gen 2 already on sale?..

1. If they know what the issue is (and they fixed it), they are just plain unwilling (ie too expensive) to backport the fix
2. If they still don't know what the issue is, but they fixed it accidentally in gen 2, why not offer the ability to either replace defective gen 1 mainboards with gen 2? The case/ports look identical. Or offer an exchange programme from gen 1 to gen 2?

What if the issue is in hardware?

Normally I would say that points to an HW problem, but after seeing how Lenovo teams are operating internally,

eg: they have no idea what team XYZ is doing, nor care to share fixes, it may be as well an SW fix also.

@MarkRHPearson any idea? Care to explain? Can you also ask the T/P14{s} gen2 team(s) about that?

Well, that means:

1) They knowingly sold br0ken HW.

2) If the HW piece is not something like the CPU

( which I don't believe, AMD can solve these issues with an uucode update )

and Lenovo tells us what it is, it could be probably replaced with something working.

3) Nothing can be done and you have a broken laptop regarding that matter

Lenovo may recall these models or offer some kind of deal. But since they deny the issue I don't know.

@CoranH

I am running BIOS 1.32 and Windows 20H2.

Btw. great info with the Energy Star comparison! It is crazy, that Lenovo does not do anything about it and just post it like that.

1) They knowingly sold br0ken HW.

and you still think we don't have a case for a class action?

I've got my laptop from the service depot. They replaced my motherboard and wiped out all my data, despite my having KYD warranty and asking them to return me my drive, as I didn't have any tools to disassemble a laptop at home. The laptop now just sits in the drawer, not even plugged to AC (probably already discharged), without an OS, and I don't have any incentive to install anything on it, as I know the machine is completely useless.

And it makes me so mad, that I've paid so much money for it, and the only time I used it in the entire year I owned it, is the time I spent installing linux and troubleshooting suspend. No positive return on tremendous investment of time and money. I literally feel robbed by Lenovo. And it just blows my mind, that a company with a big name can just get away with it. As if I bought an unnamed 300$ laptop from aliexpress!

I don't think there is a case. Is there any documentation for the energy consumption in those states? The only thing there is is the max battery life under very specific usage.

There could be a case, but this depends on so many things.

Right now one could use their own numbers against them and show their

own argumentation, hiding behind 'e-cert' is bogus.

Thinking about the amount of stress that it will cause, it might be better to sell the laptop.

Take the loss, buy another one and forget about the whole Thinkpad rubbish.

it might be better to sell the laptop.

I was contemplating on this, but unlike Lenovo, I can't sell it without disclosing known issues :-P And I figured, at any point I'd be able to sell this garbage for the price of spare parts or a bit more (it basically can't be advertised as a laptop, it's essentially a weirdly looking Intel NUC), so it can sit for a while in my desk. And maybe Lenovo management will come to their senses eventually. So I don't see the price of this laptop dropping any more than it is now in the near future (spare parts will cost almost the same), but potentially it can cost much more (like half its original price) if Lenovo eventually releases a fix.
