Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

2021-07-18, 16:30 PM

Hi guys,

just to give you some idea, how the Windows S0ix works with the BIOS 1.34 on P14s, my numbers are between 612 mW to 791 mW. So for me, it is a little bit worse than what it was on 1.32. On the other hand, my problem with occasional high drain (e.g. discharging 35% of the battery in 2 hours of sleep) seems to be gone.

EDIT: S3 sleep is still broken and after waking up the machine restarts itself.

So about twice the numbers I see with Linux and S0ix..

But half the numbers from their e-cert.

Hey @MarkRHPearson , has the amd team been able to find out what the problem is with external screens (no signal on 4k screen when set to 60hz on 4k screen over usb-c dock gen2)? Could you please give us an update?

That's doesn't look like related to battery drain. Better to ask in a dedicated topic.

I look to be rather late to the party.  Same problems as others have described with sleep S3/S0ix, amongst other problems, bluetooth & trackpad etc,  in both Win10 and Debian 10. I've even read every post in this overwhelming thread.  Updated to BIOS v1.34, still no joy, so no point in going over everything. Currently trying, unsuccessfully, to get a refund for a 2 month old P14s AMD - 512SSD & 40GB RAM.

Back to my ever trusty W520 and sorry Lenovo, you've lost a customer from the T61 days.

I am on POp_os 21.04... running 5.11 kernel.... but decided to test 5.14 rc2 from ubuntu...ubuntu kernel mainline

P14s 1.34 bios, Windows 10 standby (s0ix)....

Machine is in standby mode since 12:35 pm  lisbon Time... will look at the results at 10:00 pm... (when I am at home again)

I am looking forward to see if I get better/close result to @osnix ones....

I didn't have time to test 5.14.rc2, not sure if all patches went in.

And like Mark said.. with S0ix we are on our own ;)

I can remember that was a bit different a while ago,

the time he told us to wait for S0ix ;)

BTW, be sure that the kernel has the needed config options set.

I still have a question for @MarkRHPearson & the BIOS 'team',

also, that is a suggestion to add an internal test, regardless of

'e-cert' results.

How any developer & engineer @Lenovo thinks it is OK, a Laptop,

( any Laptop BTW ), to consume *less* or the same energy in *IDLE* than in S3/S0ix?

That should be a TEST internally.

I get my P14s without any optimizations to eat less <1W, and with some,

<750mW ..So why does it eat >1W in S3 ?:)

I guess we know this... unfortunately... for a long time now...

umm... i guess the AMD built debs should come with those options enabled??

you can check your current config if needed, on my system it's on the path:

/proc/config.gz

So... my results so far:

as I said machine went to sleep at 12:34 with 51180 mhw 99,4% battery and wakeup at 21:36 with 42030 mhw 81,6% battery...

so.. help me out @osnix ... what is the math? :)

seems very...bad??!

you can check your current config if needed, on my system it's on the path:

/proc/config.gz

On Pop_os I cannot find config.gz under /proc

It is under /boot

and the config for 5.14.0-051400rc2-generic has the following options configured this way:

CONFIG_AMD_PMC=m

CONFIG_I2C_HID_ACPI=m

CONFIG_HSA_AMD=y
CONFIG_HSA_AMD_SVM=y

(see full rc2 config attached)

So... not sure where this puts us concerning that some of these configs have different values from patches made by @osnix

??
