Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

If it helps, running BIOS 1.30, touchpad won't work after boot sometimes (or suspend, I can't remember), so might be related.

Now, back in 1.29 touchpad has no issues after boot.

Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux): Is T14s AMD affected as well?

2021-02-01, 16:43 PM

Can I just confirm:

Is the T14s AMD affected by this batt drain issue?

I received one early last month and imediately upgraded BIOS to 1.30.

I have noticed a batt drain in suspend mode but thought nothing of it.

I have Fedora 32 dual installed

Hi,

T14s passed e-cert succesfully so shouldn't be impacted.

Just to confirm - suspend mode is 'linux' in the BIOS? (needed for AMD platforms)

What kind of drain are you looking at?

Mark

Thanks for your response Mark.

Ok, so suspend mode is set to 'linux'.

Over a 10hr period last night it went from 68% to 57% - so about 1% per hour

I don't have a T14s AMD myself to try this out - looking to see if I can get one in my team, but if you're happy building your own kernel it might be worth trying this patch:

https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20210204051850.64857-1-aaron.ma@canonical.com/

If you're able to try it let me know please :)

Thanks

Do I understand it correctly that this patch only affects users that have "Always on USB" activated in BIOS? I'm asking because this was one of the first things I turned off when I noticed the battery drain. Unfortunately, it doesn't really seem to help, since in my case the drain is still there.

FWIW, battery drain is still present on:

  • X13 (either 1.29 or 1.30 BIOS)
  • P14s (1.30 BIOS)

USB always-on is disabled on both, S3 property is set to "Linux".

Both are running latest LTS kernel: 5.10.12.

While mildly off-topic, TSC is dysfunctional on both: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Other-Linux-Discussions/Unusable-TSC-on-P14s-and-X13-with-the-latest-LTS-kernel/m-p/5064905

Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

2021-02-14, 17:00 PM

today realized i'm having pretty similar issues with the battery drain whereas i do power off my laptop every time.

i do power off with: `shutdown -h now`

running latest bios firmware

sleep state: linux

wake on lan: disabled

always on usb: disabled

running NixOS.

installed upowerd and tlp:

```
    upower = {
      enable = true;
      criticalPowerAction = "PowerOff";
    };
    tlp = {
      enable = true;
      settings = {
        CPU_SCALING_GOVERNOR_ON_AC = "performance";
        CPU_SCALING_GOVERNOR_ON_BAT = "powersave";
        # The following prevents the battery from charging fully to
        # preserve lifetime. Run `tlp fullcharge` to temporarily force
        # full charge.
        # https://linrunner.de/tlp/faq/battery.html#how-to-choose-good-battery-charge-thresholds
        START_CHARGE_THRESH_BAT0 = 40;
        STOP_CHARGE_THRESH_BAT0 = 50;
        # 100 being the maximum, limit the speed of my CPU to reduce
        # heat and increase battery usage:
        CPU_MAX_PERF_ON_AC = 70;
        CPU_MAX_PERF_ON_BAT = 30;
        SOUND_POWER_SAVE_ON_AC = 0;
        SOUND_POWER_SAVE_ON_BAT = 1;
        CONTROL_BRIGHTNESS = 1;
        BATT_BRIGHTNESS_COMMAND = "brightnessctl --device=amdgpu_bl0 set 20%";
        LM_AC_BRIGHTNESS_COMMAND = "brightnessctl --device=amdgpu_bl0 set 35%";
        NOLM_AC_BRIGHTNESS_COMMAND =
          "brightnessctl --device=amdgpu_bl0 set 35%";
        BRIGHTNESS_OUTPUT = "/sys/class/backlight/amdgpu_bl0/brightness";
      };
    };
  };
```

i have laptop for about 2-3 months, and already 11 cycle of battery. first time i suspected something weird was when i was powering off in the evening and starting up next day, the charge would not be the same 49% as per TLP, i thought, ok fine, maybe i'm tripping.

but then, powered off two days ago, and starting up just now: the charge is 5%.

ps. i do have splash Lenovo screen hanging for about 10-15 seconds, anyone experiencing the same?

That's the problem. Have a look around, quite a few people have reported worsened battery drain while using 1.30 compared to the 1.29.

At the time of writing, general consensus seems to be:

  1. Stick with v1.29 until Lenovo releases something better.
    Tangentially related, this is the latest version available via `fwupdmgr`, 1.30 can be downloaded solely via Lenovo website.
  2. Shutdown instead of using suspend or hibernate if you want to save your battery.
  3. If you are representing a company (or have an access to someone who does) - complain to your Lenovo sales rep. and let them know about Dell offers :)

Hey!

Yeah, already downgraded to BIOS 1.29, looking good for now.
