Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

2021-08-25, 10:29 AM

thanks @TZet

I disabled fingerprint(I even do not have that), Smart-card reader(unfortunately I need that) and LAN and I am now getting 0.52W/h discharge rate in S0ix using manjaro 5.14.0-rc6

Machine: 20UD

I unfortunately have Samsung SSD that came with the machine...

Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

Just a quick report to the thread:

my machine T14 Gen 1 AMD Ryzen 7 4750 // SKU#  LENOVO_MT_20UH_BU_Think_FM_ThinkPad T14s Gen 1

I have an ACTUAL WWAN card (Fibocom 850) and disabled the Fingerprint sensor (I don't have one) in the bios

In S3 I continually get 0.45Wh to 0.49 Wh per hour

Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

Joining the party:

  • T14 AMD 4750U (20UDS0DK00); BIOS 1.34; kernel 5.10.60
  • Sleep State in BIOS: ‘Linux’
  • Enabled in BIOS: Always on USB. CPU Power Management, Lid Sensor
  • Disabled in BIOS: Wake on Lan, Charge in Battery Mode
  • Empty WWAN slot

I infer a typical average discharge rate of about 1.4 %/h from a still limited set of data points:

  • Duration of 0 days 1 hours 30 minutes sleeping (suspend).
Energy change of -2.1 % (-1090 mWh) at an average rate of -1.40 %/h (-725 mW).
  • Duration of 0 days 0 hours 19 minutes sleeping (suspend).
Battery energy change of -.4 % (-250 mWh) at an average rate of -1.46 %/h (-753 mW).
  • Duration of 0 days 3 hours 26 minutes sleeping (suspend).
Battery energy change of -4.5 % (-2320 mWh) at an average rate of -1.30 %/h (-673 mW).

Data gathered using my systemd system-sleep script batenergy (available on GitHub).

With my previous laptop (X220), I never worried about keeping it suspended over the weekend, but with this laptop a suspended weekend would reduce the battery's energy by two-thirds of full energy. I agree with the general assessment that this is unacceptable for a modern laptop.

Hi guys

83 pages here..

Whats the best way to resolve this power drain  issue ?

1. roll back to older firmware

2. use hibernate instead

3. install 5.14 kernel

4. enable this S0ix power mode

I'm on Pop_OS (Ubuntu) and would rather not mess with the kernel

thanks

I worked out a magical subjective trick for myself :)))
I boot into BIOS, change the LAN device to the opposite value (enabled/disabled), go to the save and exit menu (I don't press F10), boot into the OS, check at a 10-minute interval and see 0.60, after I boot into BIOS again, do the same things and see 0.30

Magic:)))

Some think you should read them all...

From what I know:
-Use the latest kernel, 5.14. I guess ubuntu's kernel will work on Pop_OS, https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.14/ (Install the 4 packages that don't have lowlatency in the name with "sudo dpkg -i linux*.deb").
-Use latest BIOS, 1.34.
-Disable always on USB on BIOS, there might be some other settings I'm missing...
-I have similar results with S3 and S0ix, but some people here are achieving great results with S0ix.

Even with this setup, my power usage is very high. You can check your power usage with: https://github.com/oliver-machacik/batdistrack

Linux kernel 5.14 was released recently and also BIOS version 1.35. Sadly none of the common issues are addressed in the changelog.

Previously I had a high power usage in the beginning which declided over time up to ~0.36 W/h if I was lucky. With the current BIOS and kernel version it is much more stable but also higher with ~0.45 W/h.

ok so
1. its not fixed in latest firmware (are lenovo looking into this?)
2. its not fixed in latest kernel

Does downgrading to 1.29 kernel resolve this or not?

any comments on using the hibernate feature?

Sad, too, that 1.35 is not yet available via LVFS, not even in testing. A vendor that claims to support Linux should show more committment – it's not THAT hard to set up a build chain that automatically distributes to other places that the own support website.
