Re:T14 AMD battery drain in standby (Linux)

Hi @MarkRHPearson

Is Lenovo continuing attempts to reduce the power consumption in S3 and other bugs or has this series of platforms entered a state where BIOS updates would be provided  only for security patches and things that break functionality(according to lenovo) will be provided ?

Thanks

Random thoughts after reading the MEGA issue (now closed) for making S0ix work properly on AMD.

  • Seems like kernel 5.14 or probably next one will iron most if not all quirks. I think we could expect power drains between 0.3-0.5.
  • I don't know if those numbers are good enough. For sure they are poor compared to previous TP models (but Intel). Does anybody know how they compare to other AMD laptops in the market?
  • Looks like industry is pushing towards this sleep mode which is what smartphones are using when idle. My guess: this falls under the plan for convergence between mobile and laptop :)
  • Are there any advantages for a desktop user to prefer S0ix vs S3 at the cost of slightly more drain? I mean, faster wake-up? What about chat, email, VPN... would connections persist, messages be queued?

5.14 has been released and the issue persists. The real convergence will probably start with good ARM Windows/Linux laptops in the market.

Got an outlier. This is interesting because it shows that such low values are possible, somehow:

System, BIOS version: ThinkPad T14 Gen 1, R1BET66W(1.35 ).
Kernel release, parameters: 5.14.0-1-mainline, initrd=\amd-ucode.img initrd=\initramfs-linux-mainline.img root="PARTLABEL=linux" audit=0 random.trust_cpu=on mitigations=off iommu=pt libata.allow_tpm=1 resume=UUID=0471d8ad-ea0b-4deb-8d54-49dd6e4bc7b9 resume_offset=1015808 psmouse.synaptics_intertouch=1 tsc=nowatchdog.
Suspend state: [deep].
Suspend duration: 03h 43m.
Discharge rate: .20955 W/h.

No reason to hear something from the FW team. According to the there is no problem. The laptop passes the e-cert thingy.

@ Stephen Mathews wrote:

This sleep issue is getting ridiculous, this thread has been open for 4 months now and has little traction from what I can tell. I'm tired of trying new bios and drivers just to be disappointed for the Nth time. This is not the only issue with this laptop, which has obviously missed most of the QA process.

I gave up on mine and bought a Yoga 7i (Tiger Lake) which is much less powerful, but stable. With the amount of issues I see on the forum for T14 (AMD), I think that Lenovo should consider a buy back program. I've owned many ThinkPads over the years and this is the worst experience I've had, from ordering through ownership.

I'm having the same issue with latest t14 gen 2 5850u :/
