T14 AMD, kernel says "ACPI Error: No handler for Region [ECSI]"

2021-02-16, 21:59 PM

The kernel I'm using on my T14 AMD (currently 5.10.16) is reporting a number of suspicious errors that may point to firmware issues. I'll report them here one by one. This one concerns ACPI.

ACPI Error: No handler for Region [ECSI] (000000004e03c623) [EmbeddedControl] (20200925/evregion-127)
ACPI Error: Region EmbeddedControl (ID=3) has no handler (20200925/exfldio-261)
ACPI Error: Aborting method \_SB.UBTC.ECRD due to previous error (AE_NOT_EXIST) (20200925/psparse-529)
ACPI Error: Aborting method \_SB.UBTC._DSM due to previous error (AE_NOT_EXIST) (20200925/psparse-529)
ACPI: \_SB_.UBTC: failed to evaluate _DSM (0x6)
ucsi_acpi USBC000:00: ucsi_acpi_dsm: failed to evaluate _DSM 2

Does anyone know what this is about, whether I should be concerned, and what can be or is being done about it?

Same on X13/P14s, however I vaguely recall this being reported at Kernel-archives (Lore).

I have not found it there, but there are reports out there. For example for Ubuntu. A similar error was also reported there and on Stack Exchange. There a suggestion is to turn acpi off, which seems to me to be the wrong fix here. While it may not have a big impact, it still very much seems like a kernel or firmware bug on Thinkpads, so I'd hope Lenovo would get it fixed.

What Distro are you running as I have the latest RHEL right now on mine and see no issue granted it is an earlier kernel.  Is the kernel provided by the Distro or your own compile?

Gentoo. Own compile. Perhaps you can test a newer kernel? What is your kernel version, so that perhaps I can test that one (may be difficult to reuse my .config, though)?

I'm seeing this on my T14 AMD with Ubuntu 20.04. Not sure what the side-effects of it are but I've raised a ticket with the FW team for their insight (for my reference - LO-1054)

Thanks

Mark

Great to hear, appreciate you following up on this one. Could you provide an update once there is a reply from FW team?

Also, if I might use this opportunity of having your attention, there are:

  1. Issue with unstable TSC
  2. Lengthy discussion about battery drain problem on T14, X13, P14s. You might want to rename the topic to reflect the affected platforms.
  3. Issue with the snd_soc_register_card() failing.

Confirm all 4 issues on my T14 AMD:

1. ACPI Error: No handler for Region [ECSI]

2. Issue with unstable TSC

3. Battery drain problem

4. Issue with the snd_soc_register_card() failing.

Kernel: 5.11.1-arch1-1

P.S. I am very sorry that I got to this forum only after purchasing ((
The laptop has a number of notorious problems that most users have, but the support is either silent or "can't reproduce"

I can also confirm all issues on my X13, BIOS version 1.30.
