I know it improves battery drain, as I said in my comment. But I have suspended (s0ix) my laptop via UI, then closed the lid, put the laptop in my bag, to found it dead a few hours later... because it woke up when I closed the lid. That alone makes it not ready.

If people have to read a 90 pages thread to get a decent battery drain on s0ix, disabling features they might want in the bios... clearly isn't ready.

1. this is S3 discussion, not s0ix

2. just close the lid, it will sleep and do it quite well (compared to before, It takes 4 days to fully discharge it)

3. I have everything enabled - the stupid workaround is, 1. enable all devices except networking(disable that), 2. set sleep to s0ix, 3. save, reboot to UEFI, 4. enable networking, 5. save, reboot. Enjoy

I get 0.55W. I still think it is way too high, and think it is something to do with SSD, because I am on Samsung SSD from out of the box, ppl with Micron SSD get 0.3W. I need to change my SSD anyway, because it is full. But AFAIK you cannot buy Micron SSD anywhere in Estonia

T14, T14s & X13 G1 AMD Linux - S3 standby battery drain improvements

2021-09-20, 11:31 AM

compared to before, It takes 4 days to fully discharge it

... which still is not what one would expect from a business laptop computer. Especially, as previous generations do much better.

And, by the way, not everyone here gets 4 days of standby. In my case, the battery does not carry the T14 over a weekend.

0.55W

0.3W

Even smart TVs burn less than 0.1 W in standby ...

Re:T14, T14s & X13 G1 AMD Linux - S3 standby battery drain improvements

Because I have trouble finding a reference point  for S3 power draw (are there any lists on-line?), I used my script also on my previous laptop, an X220. This gave results that I did not expect:

  • 1116 mW for 17 min sleep
  •  828 mW for 2 hour 50 min sleep
  •  805 mW for 11 hour 19 min sleep

I had expected quite a bit less and less than my T14, because in my recollection this laptop lasted quite long when suspended during day-to-day use. By the end I upgraded it with double SSD and 16 GiB RAM, so perhaps it was less before.

Of course a 10 year-old machine may not be the proper reference. Therefore, I'd like to ask for other people here to report what they get in terms of measured S3 power draw (no estimates, please use a script such as mine) on laptops more comparable to the T14 and friends (more recent).

Obviously, it would still be useful to know what values Lenovo has in terms of measurements and design target for S3 power draw…

For some models between ~2011–2017(?), one can find the sheets with measurement info on-line: <https://www.google.com/search?q=site:lenovo.com+"Product+environmental+attributes+–+THE+ECO+DECLARATION">. I'd love to see such a sheet for the T14 Gen 1 AMD.

From what I can see the values lie between 300 and 900 mW for S3 (sleep; WOL does not matter much) and 200 and 400 mW for S5 (shutdown with WOL).

I'm starting to think that the values we're seeing for our T14 and friends are typical and what we can expect is that Lenovo provides clear pointers to achieving the 350 mW some have been getting with S3 and ‘modern standby’. However, I'd love to be proven wrong by people showing measurement results on comparable laptops that go significantly lower.

Re:T14, T14s & X13 G1 AMD Linux - S3 standby battery drain improvements

I'm joining the thread with ~30% battery drain overnight. The machine is T14 gen2 AMD 5850U. Currently running Ubuntu 21.04 with kernel 5.11. BIOS updated to 1.09. I read all the threads and followed the instructions for the BIOS settings. I can't update the kernel, because there are no wifi drivers for 5.14. I have a dual boot and see it in Windows (although not that severe). The fact that this machine fits some "standard" is not enough, because it is not advertised as "standard" laptop at "standard price" (i.e. I expect something more for this price). Is there any option for escalation of this problem? (question moved to the Gen2 thread. Feel free to delete this post)

@ nick_st how do you have bios 1.35? The latest bios version for gen 2 is 1.09

I have a T14s Gen 1 with AMD 4750U using Windows 10 and standby set to Linux/S3 in the bios.

I just updated the BIOS to 1.35 and after a 9 hour test, the drain was 1.1 W/hr

I also disabled ethernet, the smart card reader, and always-on usb in the bios.

You can't do that in Windows.. won't work at all that way. And this is about Linux.
