Re: ThinkPad E485/E585 - Firmware bug ACPI IVRS table

In the end, all the changes in the Kernel are merely workarounds for a broken BIOS.

Lenovo/AMD should fix this.

Lenovo told me that AMD did not sent them the correct information. AMD says that it is up to OEMs to put the correct information. Looks like they are playing like children passing each other the ball.

I am sure both companies have enough clout with each other to sit together and tell each other what they need and fix it!

Seems a bit lazy on both parties.

@ridobe thank you. I've been perplexed by all the disagreeing reports of what kernel boot params work. I haven't compiled a kernel in over 15 years so I'm quite out of touch with it. Seems all these vendor patches - Ubuntu, Fedora, Tumbleweed - have been obscuring the view. Let's hope for good things in 5.0!

@JimmyTwoShoots,

I agree, I have no idea what is up with all of the miscellaneous workarounds that work for some and not others.  I'm sure what I've gone through won't benefit everyone.

That said, I'm going to compile rc3 later today when available without the changes I've made to see if it is the commits working and not my "fix".  After looking through the newest commits, I believe it's this one that may be the winner.

This bug was noticed in v5.0-rc1 after a change in commit c5eb1190074c
("PCI / PM: Allow runtime PM without callback functions") caused
pci_disable_acs_redir() to be called during shutdown which manifested
as an unable to handle kernel paging request

and:

It was also likely possible to trigger this bug when hotplugging PCI
devices.

So, we'll see!

Things are relatively calm here. Don't have any BIOS issues, keep on doing fresh install without touching any BIOS parameters + all Win stuff is disabled. WIFI issue seems to be gone now and still using iommu=soft. LLVM 9 or codec drivers or Mesa 19 fixes the WIFI bug. Kernel 4.20.3 or RC2 give the same result: Stable.

Mint Tessa by far gives the best results, 18.10 does not work properly here. Plus, we always get Kernel PPA at Ubuntu:
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D

cd //home/xx/Downloads
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Removing this also + libllvm6:

sudo apt-get remove mono-runtime-common gnome-orca flatpak

And to boot faster and to get rid of unencessary stuff:
VISUALIZE STARTUP APPLICATIONS:

sudo sed -i 's/NoDisplay=true/NoDisplay=false/g' /etc/xdg/autostart/*.desktop

Disabling this:
Certificate and Keyring Storage,Secret Storage Service,SSH Key Agent, Zeitgeist + Bluetooth, Caribou, Mint Welcome,Print Queue Applet and Update Manager.

Got WIndows 10 out, running Mint LVM entire disk. The only bug left, we are not able to dual boot 2 distros with Secure Boot enabled. Each time, we are loosing the first install.

Lastly, our machine returns errors and it is not a bad idea at all to disable Apport.
For Ubuntu:

sudo -i gedit /etc/default/apport

For Mint:

sudo -i xed /etc/default/apport

Set both lines to zero.

All the best,

Re: ThinkPad E485/E585 - Firmware bug ACPI IVRS table

I built a vanilla 4.20.3 on Ubuntu 18.10 and upgraded to bios 1.48.

I found I still need iommu=pt and resume-from-suspend only sometimes worked.

I then tried setting the PCIE ASPM to 'performance', even though my understanding from @ridobe's comments is that is for a possible 5.0-rc1/2 bug, just to be sure, and no difference.

Back to bios 1.32 despite it's annoying asymmetric throttling behavior (which turned out to make no difference in kernel compile time on a/c vs the bugfixed 1.48)

It wasn't my change.  It was fixed in rc3.  I reverted my change to test it, compiled and am running with no kernel parameters and have successful suspend and wake.

If you can get your hands on rc3 you could give it a try.  Again, I have:

  • 5.0.0rc3
  • Arch linux
  • 1.48 bios
  • no ivrs kernel parameters
  • no iommu=pt/soft (I think I have different IOMMU settings in my kernel, which in turn may negate the need)
  • no suspend/wake issues

@ridobe
How did you get rc3? Is there an easy way to install it, or a link (tut) to do so? There seems to be many bug fixes.

try it with kernel 5.0-rc3 and arch linux but i have still the same problems:

cant boot without iommu=soft

resume from suspend didnt work if you wait 2h or longer.

With BIOS updated to 1.48?
