Re: ThinkPad E485/E585 - Firmware bug ACPI IVRS table

2019-01-22, 22:19 PM

My config:

* BIOS: 1.32 (the keyboard patch)

* Kernel: 4.18.8 with Ubuntu sauces

* OS: Kubuntu 18.04

* GRUB Parameters:

  • iommu=soft
  • idle=nomwait (fix CPU freezing issue)
  • ivrs_ioapic[33]=00:00.1 (microSD card reader fix)

* replaced Wifi card with the Intel one mentioned above

This is the most stable my machine has been running since I received it. No random hangs / crashes, suspend / wake works perfectly, bluetooth works after wake, etc. I've been using the compiled kernels from this repo that also include the new graphics drivers. Just a heads up for everyone.

I use this laptop for work so I can't really mess around with kernels too much. Uptime is currently >6  days.

lsb_release -a && uname -r
LSB Version:    n/a
Distributor ID: openSUSE
Description:    openSUSE Tumbleweed
Release:        20190115
Codename:       n/a
5.0.0-rc3-1.g05bf5c0-default

 Suspend works without any modifications., same for logout and lock screen. Wifi seems more robust, but we may buy sooner or later another Network card. Still stable here.

To get latest Kernel in Tumbleweed:

su -

zypper dist-upgrade -r kernel-repo

Follow the instructions... We made an error by removing 4.20.1, but rc3 is ok....

zypper ps -s

sudo reboot

BTRF / LVM / KDE

 Custom Kernel in Tumbleweed

 Tweak it After Fresh Install

Edit: Still not able to remove iommu=soft, freezes at loading ramdisk. Not possible either to enable secure boot after installing rc3, get a message saying <<you must load the kernel first>>. In Mint, disabling and re-enabling secure boot fixes it.

WiFi issue is now gone in the TV room, visual rendering is at high when streaming at 6600kbps.1920x1080 on TV or on lappy. Not loosing the signal and stays near 90%. RC3 is a magic number.

Did you manage to make Bluetooth work on Linux with Intel AC 9260? I think I've tried it all, but it doesn't work.

It works flawlessly on Windows 10. It doesn't work on Linux although Intel says it does.

I haven't gotten bluetooth working.  I've tried everything I can think of too.

I read a few times that making the laptop sleep and then wake up makes bluetooth work, but I haven't tested it yet.

I have an intel AC 9260 in my desktop and works with no issue in Debian Buster. Both wireless and bluetooth. I do not think I have anything out of the ordinary installed - iwlwifi firmwares and the bluetooth stack only.

On current openSUSE Tumbleweed (Kernel 4.20) Suspend, Wireless and Bluetooth works perfectly, only the iommu=soft command is still needed.

Indeed, 4.20 works too, but KDE generates lots of errors. Gnome DE works better, will try Xfce. Nothing to test Bluetooth for now. For iommu=soft, we need a patch or will have to use it for eternity to boot ISO images. And to load Kernel 4.20 or higher. Still have success with custom Kernel and WIFI network.

The given method above erases Kernel 4.20, but we have a link for an RPM package now = 5.0-rc3 and will try it later to see if secure boot works.
RPM Package AMD64

This file must be edit to preserve Kernel 4.20 as follow.

To keep 4 kernel versions:
zypper in leafpad
leafpad /etc/zypp/zypp.conf
Add this line (bold) below this one:
multiversion = provides:multiversion(kernel)
multiversion.kernels = latest,latest-1,latest-2,latest-3,running
Save and exit

All the best,

Big thanks to everyone posting in this thread.  I just ordered an E485 today since it was advertised at such a great price, and unfortunately didn't see this thread until afterwards - plus the Lenovo Aus store doesn't let us cancel orders even if they haven't been processed yet.

I'm intending to run Linux on it so the information here is really invaluable.
