[Thinkpad E495] FnLock led has no feedback.

2019-12-16, 21:45 PM
Hello, I got this issue where the Esc led is stuck in ON/OFF regardless of the FnLock status. So if I boot into the machine and FnLock is disabled (led is off), even if I press Fn/Esc and FnLock gets enabled, the led will remain OFF. Unless I suspend or reboot. But then again, if FnLock is enabled, and the led is now ON, the led will remain ON regardless of the FnLock status. If I want the led OFF again, I would have to suspend or reboot making sure FnLock disabled. So the led only swaps between ON and OFF after rebooting or suspending. But never when pressing Fn/Lock. FnLock works just fine, except for the led being stuck into ON or OFF. (In BIOS, enabling 'Fn sticky key' controls the led just fine. I'm not sure how does 'Fn sticky key' actually works. But at least the led goes from ON (pressing Fn once) to OFF (pressing Fn twice). But no luck for the FnLock way (Fn sticky key disabled). (both F1 and F4 leds HAD this same exact issue, but I noticed that after a few kernel upgrades, the F1 (mute) led became responsive, and after some other kernel upgrades, the F4 key became responsive as well, the next kernel releases might have more and more fixes as always But for now I prefer to report this issue here.) I upgraded to latest BIOS 1.10 with no difference on the matter btw.

Can you please provide the Linux distribution and version you are using and the current kernel release version you have installed as this will help in reproducing the issue.

At the moment Fedora 31, kernel 5.3.16.

(Last week I tried major distros like Debian 10(backported linux 5.2 and 5.3), Ubuntu 18.04, Arch (linux 5.4.2), SuSe Tumbleweed (5.3), and Mageia. All of them same problem)

Btw. This laptop will not poweroff or reboot when using 4.19 or older (SysRq can help).   So the keyboard's leds progress might be reproducible since 5.0 to 5.2  (5.2 being the release where the leds became responsive in F1 and F4 (bloq mayus always worked). I am sure that using 5.0 or 5.1 will result in F1 and F4 not responding properly.

You can get it from dmesg and grep for BIOS, it will show the BIOS firmware name and version number, you should also be able to the the EC firmware level.

Just wanted to do a follow up, the issue hasn't been fixed or solved, but dmesg has a different output.

Fedora 31, kernel 5.5.17-200 has the following output:

I had troubles with jack too.

headphones without micro is been detecting like a micro ones and UN connect the builtin micro.. so if you are using headphoness with jack the builtin micro is not going to work because it's disconnected. Is it happening to you??

Aparte the led factor, it'¡s anoother thing.

BTW if you reboot with the headphones the micro of the laptop is "connected" again so you can use it, but its annoying-.-

Re:[Thinkpad E495] FnLock led has no feedback.

Following ..
I have the same issue in Windows with Ideapad 5-14ARE05.
Upon resetting Windows the FnLock light doesn't turn on anymore, but the functionality is there. The light feedback was quite useful so I'm looking for ways to make it work again.
Installed every driver that the support page offers.
I noticed that the Lenovo Fn driver lists only 1 acpi device ID that I do not have, and thus the installation has no effect. That driver was supposed to offer the "Lenovo Fn and function keys service" , but no acpi device id match => no service registered.

Any other suggestions to try out ?

Solved: my solution was to flash bios

I don't have any updates for my bios , just the same version available to download. After enabling "back flash" in bios I was able to re-flash the same version and the fnlock led light is back to life.
