I have purchased a Thinkpad T580 recently and I replaced Windows with Linux. So far it looks like all devices are working except the fingerprint reader. According to the support page it has a Synaptics Metallica MIS Touch Fingerprint Reader device installed, but driver is only provided for Windows.
I visited symaptics.com and the website says I need to contact the OEM regarding hardware support.
Is there any plan to release a driver for Linux?

For me, on my Lenovo Thinkpad L570, runinng Ubuntu 18.04, this was the solution!:
Section "1. FPrint" on “Fingerprint readers integration” team - https://launchpad.net/~fingerprint .
To find out the ID of your fingerprint reader, run the “lsusb” command in Terminal and look into the sixth (and seventh) column(s) of the output.
