Unusable TSC on P14s and X13 with the latest LTS kernel

2021-02-07, 0:07 AM

There are similar topics, but nothing for two devices in question.

dmesg | grep -i tsc
kern  :info  : [  +0.000000] tsc: Fast TSC calibration using PIT
kern  :info  : [  +0.000000] tsc: Detected 2096.110 MHz processor
kern  :info  : [  +0.016810] clocksource: tsc-early: mask: 0xffffffffffffffff max_cycles: 0x1e36d5c5523, max_idle_ns: 440795254528 ns
kern  :warn  : [  +0.001988] TSC synchronization [CPU#0 -> CPU#1]:
kern  :warn  : [  +0.000000] Measured 4190190354 cycles TSC warp between CPUs, turning off TSC clock.
kern  :info  : [  +0.000000] tsc: Marking TSC unstable due to check_tsc_sync_source failed

$ cat /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/current_clocksource
hpet

uname -v
#1 SMP Debian 5.10.12-1 (2021-01-30)

Battery issues observed on T14 are applicable here as well:

"In Q2 2020, Lenovo reported revenues of $14.5 billion"

Makes me wonder if there is a budget to fix firmware for some of the "flagship" devices that contributed to this financial success.

Can confirm that, but it looks like a common Lenovo BIOS bug.

That bug got fixed a while ago (mid-2020, BIOS 1.28) in the A485 model(s) as an example.

Also, Exx ThinkPads models are affected by this bug too.

Just a heads up I am reporting the TSC issue to the BIOS team for the T14, T14s and X13 systems this is not a kernel issue normally.

Thank you. P14s (Ryzen 7 Pro 4750U) is affected as well.

Thank you, don't forget the P14s :).

This kind of issue is never a kernel one, except for multi-socket machines where such a bug may be a kernel one too,

however, in both cases, there is to 100% a BIOS bug too.

From what I can tell, only Lenovo BIOSes are doing that, I don't know of any other Vendor with these issues.

I have another question. What is the proper way of reporting BIOS bugs to Lenovo?

I mean posting random things all over the forums can't be the solution.

Please also include the E14 Gen 2 in the report as it's also affected.

Carefully bumping this to check if there are any updates one month later :]

The TSC fix is in the 1.31 version of the BIOS which is not released yet as they are testing the power drain fix when powered off which is in the EC firmware of the same release of the BIOS update

On my L14 this issue seems to be gone. I'm running the 1.17 firmware. \o/
