Using ancient IBM Thinkpad 770 for Linux

I have downloaded Mandriva Linux spring 2008 which will boot on my other laptops but the IBM Thinkpad has all installed software erased and will not boot the Mandriva in the CDROM drive.

I found some documentation on lenovo website, I am happy to find the continued support and would be willing to purchase a CD or download a file which will install enough software to cause the IBM 770 to boot the Mandriva image from the downloaded files.

Re: Using ancient IBM Thinkpad 770 for Linux

Will a 770 even boot to the CD?

You might have better luck with Mepis 7. I tried a lot of Linux distros on a 600 and it ran the best. It was way faster than the Mandriva I tried and your 770 is probably even lower powered than my 600 is.

Re: Using ancient IBM Thinkpad 770 for Linux

I lost the download overnight while waiting to get a CD to work in my burner, then got the CD, downloaded and it booted with msg: this will not work on 32 bit machine.

Hooray! it got that far. Now I am downloading a 32bit version from ftp:ibiblio.org and will tell you what happens.

It is good to have expert help. Thanks.

Re: Using ancient IBM Thinkpad 770 for Linux

I have downloaded the 32 bit version, It goes into loop of repeating errors on my Sotec Laptop. it loads and displays guest login screen on my Aceratec laptop but I do not know password; it will provavly load if someone tells me the guest password.

It starts on my Thinkpad 770 and runs briefly till msg:

PANIC: this cpu is too old for the kernel.

Is there a Mepis version with older kernel?

Thnaks for your help.

Re: Using ancient IBM Thinkpad 770 for Linux

When running from the live cd I think the guest password is "guest" and the root password is "root".

Older versions are in the Virginia Tech mirrors in the "old" folder.

Re: Using ancient IBM Thinkpad 770 for Linux

I downloaded MEPIS 5.0 and it loops on Thinkpad 770.

Then I ran the CD on my Sotec and installed it. I am now a Linux newie with startup problems.

I need to activate my Brother HL5140 printer. I downloaded the Linux driver to my computer.

How can I activate the printer to print files from gmail and google docs? I have run firefox on the Sotec installation and I can view the files that I need to print.

Is this new question appropriate for you to answer?

I really need the answer because my wife depends on this computer for printing. Linux deserves to be accepted without her knowing of the problem I have installing it on the computer that she is accustomed to using for a print system.

Thank you again.

Re: Using ancient IBM Thinkpad 770 for Linux

You probably will get a better answer on the mepislovers forum.
