WWAN Fibocom L850-GL and Linux support

2019-01-02, 19:14 PM

I bought X1 Carbon 6th and X280, both with Fibocom L850-GL. WWAN with Linux do not work. I searched and found the reason. The PCI-E must be disabled, so that the card can run with USB.

It seems that Lenovo did not offered a solution since July 2017.  I searched but do not find any direct contact to Lenovo to ask the question.

The WWAN is important for me and Windows is no option anymore.

Anybody know if there is an other WWAN card wich works with Linux  and X1 Carbon 6th / X280 ?

Anybody know if there is a chance that Lenovo solve the problem with a bios update? Many new Lenovo Thinkpads have this Fibocom L850-GL inside and many business user use Linux...

So far, the other Fibocomm module - L830-EB works fine on Linux. According to this topic on Reddit, X1C6 doesn't have a whitelist for older M.2 USB WWAN modules. There are reports, that Sierra Wireless EM7345, EM7355 and EM7455 are working fine.

X280

I bought new with 850GL, do not work with Linux. I bought a Lenovo branded Fibocom 830 and it work out of the box with X280, Bios I think is 1.28.

X1 Carbon 6th

I described in this thread:

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/Linux-status-of-Fibocom-L850-Gl/td-p/4082434/highlight/false/page/5

0 person found this solution to be helpful.

This helped me too

We wanted to order 300 P53 laptops since Austrian webshop says Ubuntu supported http://tiny.cc/xmw2bz. Received test device. L850-gl does not work, L830-BE is not whitelisted. So from this year Lenovo officially doesnot work with linux. Dell has pre installed Ubuntu and in Bios they added option to change pcie slot to USB mode.

P. S. P53 Device is awsome, OPAL disk works great but Linux is requirement. Very sad day for me.

I did some research on this and I have a script to flip L850-GL modems into USB mode so they can be used with ModemManager, et cetera:

https://github.com/abrasive/xmm7360

Unfortunately on my T490 I can't work out how to get it out of flight mode! - something's messed up in ACPI land and I haven't figured it out yet. But I'd be interested to hear how people get on on other machines.

Can anyone have a try ? Apparently it can work, could be nice to have a tutorial..

If you open an issue on the Github repo, including all the output from the script, and the output of `dmesg -w` whilst running the script, that'd be a great place to start!

I have been through many post and read a lot and never found user solving the issue as the one in the post.

I've heard a lot about every possible action but never found a tutorial that all users can use.

Could you please tell me if the X1G7 "Fibocom L850-GL 4G LTE CAT9" is working with these workarounds?

I'd like to know if:

- the `Fibocom L850-GL 4G LTE CAT9` is a `EM7565/EM7455/MC7455` device
- I can make it work without the 10$ M.2 USB Adapter to flash and configure the modem

According to https://bke.ro/working-wwan-on-the-x1-carbon-gen-6/ , there is way to plug and play the device with USB, this could be a way to format without the adapter to flash, am I correct ?
