Which Linux distribution should I opt for???

2008-08-08, 17:49 PM

I have bought a new Lenovo Y410,with 2GB RAM and i'm currently using Windows XP, which is working quite fine...

Now I would like to try linux on it....

I installed Ubuntu, but it didn't recognise the sound device, neither the internal Camera, nor the bluetooth..(I had tried Ubuntu 7.10[gutsy gibbon]...

I would like to know if there is a linux distribution that may recognise all my devices or please suggest a way to  make these devices recognisable in Ubuntu itself..

Hope someone would help me out....

Linux guyzzzz help me......:mansad:

Ubuntu 9.04 solves everything..

2009-09-13, 22:04 PM

Hai... Guys i'm back after a long time of experimentation with linux. I have 'opted' for the no nonsense Ubuntu 9.04. It solved most of my problems, now it is my primary OS. I suggest all of you should use Ubuntu 9.04 or soon Ubuntu 9.10. Every media now works fine in my laptop. Sound, webcam, even, the media control-keys(except the equaliser key) works fine. I'm now fully satisfied with Ubuntu as my linux OS. No its not my linux OS, its my primary OS, and i have Windows Vista too installed, but i don't use it much now. Ubuntu offers me everything, so why use the unsafe, pirated Windows....

Also the Ubuntu installation does not support mp3 by default, as its a proprietary standard....

This and many other codecs, nd drivers have to be downloaded from the internet, so first of all my modem should be ready to be connected from the ubuntu OS, how can I get the driver for the modem??

In your first post you dont mention the modem not working... Are you talking about the ethernet, wifi or modem driver? Or something over bluetooth?

I couldnt find a quick solution for you on google, but you could try to do a little research yourself. It seems to sound issue can be helped easily, tho:

http://linuxondesktop.blogspot.com/2007/12/getting-sound-to-work-on-your-ubuntu.html (get hardy and use the 8.04 guidelines).

Google  "Lenovo Y410 ubuntu" and start reading ubuntu forum posts :)

Sabayon claims to have good hardware detection, however it seems the problem is not distribution specific.

Try Mint and Mandriva. Hopefully one of them will get your audio right.

Good luck.

George

I would recommend Ubuntu.

No OS is likely to have drivers for everything straight out of the box.

Even windows would need to have drivers supplied for some hardware if you were to reinstall with a retail copy of XP.

The oem distribution that comes installed on your notebook has these drivers installed already - that's the biggest part of an oem windows distribution.

For Ubuntu, typically you have to edit a line in a config file to make the sound work.

I had to also install the proprietary firmware for my wireless.

Both work great now.

The reason that you don't have mp3 capability in linux distribution is for legal reasons.

I'm sure someone here who is more gpl literate could give you chapter and verse on exactly why, but the bottom line is that you have to install support for certain av formats manually, usually by selecting the Restricted Extras package.

To my limited knowledge, that won't change with a different distribution.

I've already tried Ubuntu...

The modem I told you is the internal modem....

The ubuntu cd i've is the cd that we can get by just requesting on the ubuntu shipping site, for free...

Is that why many of my devices are not recognised??

Is it worth trying the SUSE linux..

When my modem is not detected in linux at all then wat's the point in saying if its ethernet or bluetooth..

Anyway the bluetooth is recognised, but not easily-for that i've to put the system into Sleep mode then wake up, then thebluetooth device is detected..

The Ubuntu Hardy heron that is out now is a beta. The final release for Hardy is not until October.

There are plenty of Linux geeks on here but appaerntly none of them have a Y410. Someone has to be first and it looks like you are it. You will have to try different distros until you find one you like. Hit the forums for the distro you are trying and see if anyone there can help you. Report back with your findings. Your efforts are appreciated.
