X1 Carbon Gen 9 Firmware Update Stuck at Blank Screen

2021-06-09, 5:31 AM

I'm running Arch on a X1 Carbon 9th Gen laptop and noticed that there are a few firmware updates available via fwupd so attempted to updated them with `fwupdmgr update`. The updates were downloaded and I chose to reboot my laptop. When I did it went to a blank black screen (with the backlight on) and got stuck there. The laptop was also getting noticeably warm/hot and the fans were blowing at what seemed like full speed. The system remained unresponsive for at least 15 minutes at which point I tried powering down by holding the power button, however this did not work. I ended up having to get a paperclip and hitting the reset button in the tiny hole on the bottom of the laptop.

$ fwupdmgr --version
client version:    1.6.0
compile-time dependency versions
    gusb:    0.3.6

daemon version:    1.6.0

Here's the output of `fwupdmgr get-devices` and `fwupdmgr get-updates`.

Thanks for the report - I'll follow up with FW team to see if they have any suggestions.

I did the update myself on the X1C9 just yesterday and for me it went smoothly (I happened to be Debian testing with fwupd version 1.6). Have you made any changes in your BIOS settings?

I did originally have boot order locking enabled. However, the problem I reported above happened AFTER I disabled that.

I have made other changes but can't recall specifics at the moment and don't know what would affect this.

We've had a few reports of people having issues with secure boot enabled - can you check that setting? Still trying to figure out what is going on there - it's on multiple platforms.

Pretty sure I have Secure Boot disabled but I'll double check and try again soon.

Re:X1 Carbon Gen 9 Firmware Update Stuck at Blank Screen

I went as far as to reset my BIOS settings today and tried again with the same results. Stuck at the blank/black screen with the back light on. Unable to reboot with the power button, had to stick a paperclip in the tiny hole on the bottom.

Is there a way to manually update the BIOS for now?

You can use the bootable CD (use a USB instead)

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/bd/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-carbon-9th-gen-type-20xw-20xx/downloads/driver-list/component?name=BIOS%2FUEFI

Probably a good idea - some initial findings are suggested the issue might be related to shim (still a lot more digging to go) and the bootable CD would bypass this (caveat - not tried it myself, my update worked fine and I haven't downgraded to retry)
