Re: X1C gen 6 - Fibocom L850-GL - Ubuntu 18.04

Fibocom L850 does have a pcie interface, how did you "turn it off" so Linux see the USB interface?

There is no Fibocom L850 in my system. I replaced it with Sierra Wireless EM7455.

so according to you the EM7455 is in fact whitelisted in the Bios, because so far I have seen mixed reports on this. is this a Lenovo branded version?

have you used it yet?

if so how stable is the connection?

As evident from `lsusb` listing, it is not. Lenovo-branded EM7455s have VID/PID equal to 1199:9079, while mine identifies as 1199:9071.

Based on the above (there is no point for Lenovo to whitelist a generic ID pair), I'd suspect a stronger statement: that X1C6's WWAN whitelists only apply to cards with PCIe interfaces. But we'll need someone with another USB-only WWAN card to verify that.

It is stable. I do not see any problems specific to X1C6.

Hi,

I just tried

at!pcoffen=2

(And did receive OK)

On my EM7455 (using a different computer), and then installed it in my X1 Carbon 6th gen, and still get  unauthorized network card error on boot.  Are you saying this should work (if I am understanding..?)

Re: X1C gen 6 - Fibocom L850-GL - Ubuntu 18.04

Yep — that's what I'm saying. If it doesn't work, then it's kinda very weird.

For completeness, here's the full log of what I did related to the firmware and WWAN, starting with purchase of X1C6:

  • bought X1C6
  • booted from a Linux live CD
  • attempted to upgrade system firmware to v1.31 via fwupd (unsuccessfully — it told me that I must already have v1.17 to upgrade fia fwupd)
  • upgraded system firmware to v1.17 via a bootable CD image
  • booted from a Linux live CD, again
  • upgraded system firmware to v1.31 via fwupd (successfully)
  • booted into Linux
  • observed unusable Fibocom WWAN card
  • disabled WWAN access in BIOS
  • booted into Linux
  • suspended the machine into S3
  • hot-swapped the WWAN card to EM7455 (my intention was to hot-swap cards while the system is in S3, because on S3 resume BIOS doesn't get a chance to enforce whitelists and I reboot very rarely)
  • resumed the machine, observed no WWAN card (I forgot to re-enable WWAN access in BIOS)
  • rebooted into BIOS, enabled WWAN access, expecting a Unauthorized message
  • to my surprise, there was none

Maybe upgrading BIOS via fwupd somehow confused the BIOS (although insofar I am aware this can't happen because either way the update image is a self-contained UEFI capsule executable). Maybe swapping the cards while it was in S3 somehow confused the BIOS. I don't know.

The only non-insane explanation I could imagine is that BIOS could skip full checks on reboot. I never fully powered off my system.

Re: X1C gen 6 - Fibocom L850-GL - Ubuntu 18.04

After playing with it more, I got it into a state where it would survive a reboot, but not a cold start.  If you completely power down the unit, and power it back up, you still do not get the unauthorized error?

Very unlikely. I'd rather not check. But that would explain everything: I swapped WWAN cards when the system was in S3 and never fully powered down the machine ever since. My initial intention was to never reboot at all.

Well, works for me! Smiley Wink

Re: X1C gen 6 - Fibocom L850-GL - Ubuntu 18.04

Glad that works for you.  For me I would be concerned while travelling that if I accidentally run out of power completely I would then need to open the unit up to get past boot error.  Suppose if one was super dilligent about never running all the way out of power, even while sleeping, it could work, but I would end up carrying around a screw driver on a business trip and just seems precarious.
