Re: [X1C6/T480s] low cTDP and trip temperature in Linux

I'd like to second the question above. Users should not get to dictate development but, with this throttling problem, and the - worse - sleep-and-trackpad-problem (which someone from Ubuntu has been working on for years), we've been waiting a long time. From a company with, ostensibly, good Linux support.

Hi,

I promise this thread is not forgotten. I have a document that I'm reviewing with the firmware team explaining the root cause of the issue and how Lenovo is fixing it - I just have to get approval before releasing it publicly. Hopefully in the next couple of days.

We're still working on the details on which platforms the fix is going to be rolled out on and timelines - I'll keep pushing to get those details for you. I do have a list of platforms that I've gathered from this thread

Sorry it's taking so long, we've been testing the fix for the last couple of weeks to make sure it is working as expected.

Thanks

Mark

Hi,

Attached should be a PDF which hopefully helps explain why this issue is happening on Linux systems and the steps Lenovo are taking to address it.

I'll very happily field any questions.

I know the main question is going to be "when will this be available for system...." - and I don't have all the answers there.

We will have the updates really soon for the X1 Carbon Gen 7 (there's actually a firmware image on LVFS right now which you can install - but my understanding is a BIOS image update is needed to go with it and that's not up yet - I'll update when both are available).

I can't make any promises on other systems yet but I'll update this thread as I find out more.

Mark

Thanks a lot, this is very helpful! Also, just adding the X1 Extreme to the list of affected devices.

I got confirmation the X1 Carbon Gen 7 drivers are posted. The notes don't mention the thermal fix (I have no idea why) but without wanting to sound too Jedi - these are the firmware you are looking for:

EC firmware: https://fwupd.org/lvfs/device/com.lenovo.ThinkPadN2HHT.firmware

BIOS: https://fwupd.org/lvfs/device/com.lenovo.ThinkPadN2HETXXW.firmware

Note - the EC firmware must be installed first. Do feedback if you hit any problems or have questions

As a note - the list of impacted systems that I've collected from this thread is:

T480/T480s

X1 Carbon 6th Gen

X1 Yoga 3rd Gen

P52/P52s/P53

T470, T490, L380

X1 extreme

Thinkpad 25 Anniversary edition

I don't have any details yet of which systems and when there will be solutions for these available. I'll continue to post to this thread when I find out more details.

Mark

Thanks! I await, for my part, the fix for the sixth generation X1.

I note that the release notes for the BIOS do say this: 'Fixed an issue where system performance may slow on Linux.'
