Re: [X1C6/T480s] low cTDP and trip temperature in Linux

In the second post to this thread, @jim156 said:

"I can confirm this issue on a X1 Carbon Gen 6. The thermal throttling offset MSR_TEMPERATURE_TARGET is set to 20 °C, which leads to a throttling temperature of 80 °C:

20

I hope Lenovo fixes this issue soon..."

I don't know if reading that MSR and checking that it's 20 is a reliable way to determine if you're affected though. Perhaps stressing the CPU and checking dmesg like you suggest @Dirdi is better.

Hi -

I also have a P53 and (I believe) I was able to overcome the CPU throttling by setting

tuned-adm profile throughput-performance

See if that works for you.

Re: [X1C6/T480s] low cTDP and trip temperature in Linux

I can report success with BIOS 1.20 on my X1Y4 (i7-8665U) on Fedora 31, I've been able to disable throttled and am now achieving all-core boost speads of 3.4-3.8Ghz during sustained compiles, with throttling at ~96 degrees and power use of 27-30W.

Is throttled stil useful for undervolting? My power consumption at idle seems to have dropped to 7-8W also, so I'm getting 6-7hrs of battery life with the 4K screen, which I'm happy with.

I would not I could not use fwupdmgr in Linux or Lenovo Vantage in Windows to upgrade, and had to manually download and install the Windows-based upgrader. However now that I have upgraded fwupdmgr is offering BIOS 1.22 with "microcode updates." Can anyone comment if this is more than just the latest SPECTRE et al. mitigations?

Yes, as well as PL1/PL2 adjustments (AFAIU artificial power limits didn't go anywhere, they were just made less stupid).

Thank you very much for the update.

I would appreciate if the BIOS fix will come even without LVFS like BIOS iso or even windows update?

Thx

Hello mudrii,

to answer your question. The fix will be for sure released too as usual way: BIOS Update (Bootable CD) and as BIOS Update Utility (Windows), additionally some models will receive it through LVFS.

As am I  we all still have to wait for further investigation before Lenovo will publish a list of all affected models and release also the bios updates.

I own a ThinkPad L380 Yoga which has the same problem. LVFS doesn't seem to have a fw update for this model yet, will it be supported ?
