Hey guys! It was easier than any solution, which you can find here!

 

All you need is add the 

Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"

string in your "Device" section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf!

 

Works like a charm.

This is only supposed to work with nVidia cards.

So, a further update from me,

 

I just managed to get brightness working (without all the workarounds)

 

This is running Ubuntu Lucid (10.04) all I had to update was

 

Change the file /etc/default/grub to have the the following

 

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset acpi_backlight=vendor"

 

(instead of ="" as it is by standard)

 

Now my brightness seems to work quite happily with the system (so changes when supposed to by power management etc etc).

 

Mic also now works without the backports (at least in the latest kernal, think it's 2.6.32-21)
