Re: Y50 Updating the bios under linux

I have the same question. Bought Y50-70 with FreeDOS 'cause I want to use Ubuntu and I don't need Windows. Then I discovered a problem with the fan (discussed in another topic here). People there say it's fixed by the new BIOS update. But all BIOS update files on the laptop support page seem to be targeting Windows 7 & 8 only.

@Lenovo, How do I update BIOS under Linux?

Do you have Windows 7 or 8 with external drive support?

If it is W7 you might be able to spoof it with some hacks from

the net to install it to an external drive but you'll need another

copy of W7.

I don't have Windows and I don't want to have it. I think Lenovo should provide universal instructions/tools to update BIOS for their laptops! For example, an ISO image with the BIOS updater tool would be great.

As far as I know, via a search of the downloads/upgrades page, a Linux BIOS

update is not available. From what I've read before, you have to update the

BIOS in Windows and then install Linux.

Sorry for the bad news.

Correction...

The X1 range has a bootable download from the Support page.

I can only assume that other laptops have something sililar.

Try finding the correct download page for your computer by

selecting the BIOS option. However before you update anything

make sure you need it by checking your current BIOS version.

I found mine of the actual BIOS boot screen.
