Re: Yoga 900-13ISK2 - BIOS update for setting RAID mode for missing hard drive on linux install

FYI, I made a post over in the other thread: skipping over the hidden BIOS pages is hard-coded into the firmware, so if you were holding out hope that maybe there is a secret hotkey for accessing them... well, there isn't.

This confirms that it is a 30 second quick fix for Lenovo (change one line of code slightly), to let us install the operating system of our choice on the hardware that we paid for. Thanks for investigating this @djpohly.

Nice work on decompiling the BIOS (I'm guessing you don't have the source otherwise we wouldn't be here).

Any pointers on what exactly that RAID mode is and why it isn't supported in Linux?  Intel seem pretty good with their kernel contributions so I wonder if this is an oversight, just tardiness or maybe it's by design?

(I messed around with installers with much newer kernels that Ubuntu shipped - I think Arch was 4.6 something)... maybe we can get a patch in for 4.8...

Nice job posting it on slashdot! I've now come to the point to return my device as well and will definitely never buy anything from Lenovo ever again..

What I love most about this whole topic is, how clearly Lenovo states its position by not posting any statement at all.

Linus may should overthink his quote about NVIDIA..

Well, at least in NVIDIA's case, it actually requires effort to make their stuff Linux compatible (they have to have a team write and maintain kernel drivers for their hardware).

In Lenovo's case, their hardware WAS Linux compatible by default (like all standard PCs), except because of their own easily-resolved oversight, the Linux compatibility of some of their hardware is broken -- even though it should theoretically  already work, and they aren't willing to dedicate 15 minutes of one engineer's time to fix the minor issue that is a major blocker for us.

Unfortunately, no solutions there. That is the page (Alan Bogh's) that prompted me to get the Yoga 900 in the first place; it was only later that I realised he had an earlier model. - it's not the GRUB issue, the drive is not visible at all (that issue is when installation goes smoothly and files are copied, but no boot) - it's not the second issue (regarding using NVMe drives on 14.04) - again, drive is not visible. - it's not the third issue (booting from NVMe); that also assumes the drive was visible and everything copied ok. I don't mean to diss you, but it's not like everyone posting here is a complete newbie to Linux; I've made the effort, looked at all the possible workarounds, messed with different kernels and RAID tools. The first hurdle is to make the drive visible, and this has not yet been achieved by anyone AFAIK... only thing I have seen that comes close is the guy that has a blog post on how to do a clean install of Windows. I'm not a kernel expert (I've only done a couple tweaks to Linux kernel drivers) but with 35 years of building computers behind me I think I'm reasonably confident in suggesting that the two possible workarounds are fixing the hardware config at boot time (in the BIOS) or reworking the driver for the hardware in the Linux kernel so that it can work with whatever mode it is configured to run in... Personally I hope Lenovo come to the party, but the silence here is suggesting they won't...

No, not the solution, only works with models from four months ago, does not work on the new NVMe models that everybody in this thread is talking about.

From the second paragraph, if you've actually read the article:
"Apparently there is a new version of the Yoga 900 which uses an NVMe SSD which may not work well with 16.04."
