Re: Yoga 900-13ISK2 - BIOS update for setting RAID mode for missing hard drive on linux install

2016-09-13, 16:18 PM

In case it helps raise flags inside Lenovo, I was about to buy a Yoga 900 before I saw this issue on another website on a page about installing Ubuntu on the Yoga 900. I'm still in the market for a laptop and the Yoga 900 seems like the best fit for my needs if I can run Linux on it, so if the issue is fixed soon, I may still buy a Lenovo laptop.

I think we found the worst support company ever. The good point about them was their Linux support which they lost that one as well. It looks like some children are behind their support team, the only thing they did for last month is every 5 days or so they change the release date of the last 4 drivers on their site, even not changing the version! Obviously they are not even trying to or do not have any clue how to fix the problem and they got silent on this thread. I'm really thinking to sell mine, in contrast to its outstanding hardware for the price! Soon the word would be spread by tech guys like us and they would lose lots of their customers.

Customer support? Do not expect much from a Chinese company.

Dear Lenovo,

I am sad to not hear from you on the subject of Linux support on Lenovo's hardware. Beside many requests, and evidence displayed in this thread that the lack of support could be changed fairly quickly, there does not seem to be any action or plan to fix the issue discussed in this thread.

In the mean time, Dell affirmed its commitment to support Linux on its hardware (see Linux on XPS 13). So I am afraid you lost a customer. I'll sell my expansive Lenovo branded door stopper and buy a shiny Dell laptop.

Sincerely yours.

Why would you sell it and not just return it as nonfunctional? No operating system can install itself on the machine due to Lenovo disabling portions of the BIOS menu.

Ianal, but in addition to any return policies, this would seem to violate the implied warranty of merchantability, that a product has to be fit for the standard uses of that type of product (here: installing operating systems on it). Lenovo does try to disclaim that warranty, but I think that in some jurisdictions, like Massachusetts, this warrantee is nondisclaimable.

If I had purchased it, I would do some combination of: return it, tell my credit card company I was not sent a functioning product, and/or complain to the better business bureau.

That'll really speed things up ... not. I take it you've never worked with a big company before? It's a days work at max to fix the BIOS issue. Alternatively, some poking around or maybe some technical documentation could fix things from the Linux side. Perhaps a formal support request would help, rather than via this forum.

As I said, not a lawyer. But try to get your money back before attempting anything like that. Suing is at best a last resort for when all attempts to negotiate have failed.

All my best,

I'm from Brazil. Bought mine when I a brother was in the USA only to discover a few months later that I was locked to Windows. I misread Bogh's article and only regret it.

I would love to hear from Lenovo, if they care. Even to say that is not viable and explain its view of the reason. To me the people in this post already did the hard part of identifying the problem and solution.

Hello everyone

I have the same issue. The installer doesn't recognize the SSD on Lenovo yoga 900 13ISK2.

In order to help I would like to say that I "solved" the issue by using an external usb disk.

What I did was: first of all I format the usb disk where I installed linux like GPT (msdos didn't work). Then I boot from another pendrive and with both of them inserted, I did the installation normally.

Now when I need to use linux I switch on my laptop using the small round button near to the normal on/off button, and that allows me to choose which disk I want to run.

It's a very poor solution but it is the best I could do.
