Re: Yoga 900-13ISK2 - BIOS update for setting RAID mode for missing hard drive on linux install

2016-09-21, 2:19 AM

The bigger problem is that the BIOS configuration has had the settings blocked out via a direct and intentional override to the vendor-provided BIOS. Everybody here would simply be able to change the setting needed if Lenovo hadn't directly disabled our ability to do so, for reasons that they have yet to explain.

This post was originally a response to a much older post, and I didn't see that the forums had kicked me back to the beginning of the thread.

That's the really fishy part. They actually wrote code to stop people from setting it with an EFI variable. They didn't just hide it from the setup utility.

If Windows 10 is so great, then why do they need to do this?

I just put in a formal support request for a BIOS revision to re-enable access to the SATA mode selection.

It might help if those here also did that (all you need is your serial number).

Is there a link to where to file the request? One of the forum moderators said that they filed a request with the development team a few months ago and then Lenovo went totally quiet about the matter...

Please don't manipulate the subject and don't convert it into a meaningless fight. Just continue to demand Bios update.

This computer has been on the market for almost a year. Lenovo has known about the issue the entire time. I'm just not sure that without any pressure, that it will ever get fixed. It might not anyway, but at least it will have caused them more trouble than it was ever worth.

The more I read through these forums and the apparent

deliberate efforts to LOCK down the BIOS, the more suspicious and disgusted I get.

This is sad!

Update: Here's Lenovo's official statement, in reply to my review on Best Buy.

This system has a Signature Edition of Windows 10 Home installed. It is locked per our agreement with Microsoft.

Indeed. I already posted a warning on Ubuntu Forums about Microsoft Signature PCs quoting the reply I got from Lenovo.

https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2337719

Warning: Microsoft Signature PC program now requires that you can't run Linux.

I got a reply from Lenovo on my Best Buy review about why the BIOS on my Yoga 900 ISK2 UltraBook has been set to stop people from using Linux.

This is related to the discussion going on Lenovo's forum's about why the SSD is locked in a proprietary RAID mode that Linux doesn't understand.

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-D...g/td-p/3339206

I've attached a screenshot of my review and Lenovo's reply.

So they admitted that this is now a requirement for Signature PCs.

So be warned that if you buy a "Microsoft Signature PC", it may not be allowed to run Linux, per Microsoft.

The Yoga 900 ISK2 at Best Buy is not labeled as a Signature Edition PC, but apparently it is one, and Lenovo's agreement with Microsoft includes making sure Linux can't be installed.
