Re: Yoga 900-13ISK2 - BIOS update for setting RAID mode for missing hard drive on linux install

2016-06-09, 14:05 PM

Any of their machines with a SATA SSD should be good. The 13ISK Yoga 900 works and the recent ThinkPad should be good. You probably want to speak with sales and get them to check the solid state drive type and confirm that you are not buying a PCI-E SSD. The SATA drive is very easy to get linux working on, while the PCI-E is a nightmare.

One note: The Yoga 900 Business Edition (which does not work) is sold under the label 13ISK for BIZ.

Good to know, now if only Lenovo could make this information easier to find. :(

How can one trust a review of a Lenovo product if Lenovo changes the hardware afterwards?

Don't use RAID0. One drive failing and you lose all your data, plus you increase the chance for a failing hard drive by 100%.

I suggest you use symbolic links or mount the second hard drive as another folder if you want more storage.

The problem is that the BIOS of the Yoga 900 for BIZ does not provide an option to switch from RAID to another mode. Unfortunately RAID is the factory default.

In my opinion a business notebook should be able to run mondern linux distros.

Especially when selling a "Business Edition" of a product Lenovo should at least make sure that tools like Clonezilla or GParted work with the product.

Re: Yoga 900-13ISK2 - BIOS update for setting RAID mode for missing hard drive on linux install

Hi,

As a wrap up:

- Those who can, are returning the laptops.

- All can post comments and/or reviews in Lenovo's product page.

And, for the issue itself, the options are:

- wait for a new firmware from Lenovo

- wait for some change at the kernel (??) Or something from the Linux side?

Something else? Ideas for those of us who still have this machine?

Regards,

Their is a new bios update for the 900s but it is dated wit 2016-04-01 and has no mention of a change for that matter.

I don't expect a bios update from Lenovo anytime soon.

Perhaps a different SSD can solve the problem (no NVME). Havn't found anything if the are supported or not on this controller/board. I have ordered one for testing.

I have also ordered an SPI programmer for our bios chip (costs only 8$) - but i takes 2-3 weeks from china.

Today they released another BIOS update for the 900s dated with 2016-05-27, but their is no change mentioned regarding the SATA mode.

Changes in this release
==================
<E1CN43WW>
(Important) 1.Update EC to E1EC28WW version.
(New)
1. Add QCA wlan OVR setting.
2. Change F1-F12 hotkey feature from BIOS to Lenovo settings.

I also tried to replace the ssd with an sata 3 m.2 disk, but the device is not recognized by bios nor by linux. So it seems that only nvme disks are supported.

Rather than take the 15% restocking fee hit, I just sold my Yoga 900-13ISK2 for the

same price I bought it for (incl. tax) and am not going to buy Lenovo again until

they fix this nonsense!
