Re: Yoga 900-13ISK2 - BIOS update for setting RAID mode for missing hard drive on linux install

2016-07-03, 8:21 AM

I got my Lenovo Yoga 900 (512GB NVMe, 16GB) today with a 14-day window to figure this out.

It has already been figured out by dumping the BIOS and I independently confirm by dumping a Lenovo BIOS update that setup_var 0xB69 0x1 is the setting that needs to be changed but I can't do this on the EFI Shell . The error message I get when I try to set 0xB69 to 0x1 is something on the lines of : "error: can't set variable using EFI (error 0x000000000000001a)" .

Then I also got this: https://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-SUCCESS-BIOS-Lock-Disabled-Yoga-2-13-Pro but it doesn't seem to bring up the advanced settings on this model.

In the meantime I might just bring up a VM with Ubuntu but I know that's not the point at all. I've tried Ubuntu 16.04 live though and hope that I'll be able to install it soon :)

I wonder if a Twitter post may grab some eyeballs this Independence Day Sale.

Re: Yoga 900-13ISK2 - BIOS update for setting RAID mode for missing hard drive on linux install

I give up. Returned my Yoga 900 today at Best Buy and also posted a review warning potential buyers about the issue.

Even laptops much more inexpensive and the ones competing with this one at this price range offer Linux support and the option to choose SATA mode as AHCI in their BIOSes, so I find it strange why these requests went unseen. Maybe Lenovo does not intend to fix this at all.

Anyway, back to where I started, writing off the time I spent in looking for potential solutions and digging into the BIOS firmware for a possible solution, but leading to nowhere.

I gave up with virtualization (too slow), but I've found the new "Bash on Ubuntu on Windows" thing to do just about everything I want -- apt, vim, clang, coreutils etc.

I can confirm this issue as well with the 13ISK Business Edition. I have tryed installing Ubuntu and later also Arch Linux with the kernel version 4.6.4, which should address latest driver issues, without any luck. I'm unfortunately stuck with mine and can't return it since it's bought through the company. It's however ridiculous that this is not fixed by Lenovo. Make a BIOS update allready, where people can set the disk interface mode.

Does disabling Secure Boot in BIOS, followed by a reboot, allow Linux to be installed?

Thank you,

Hi Amy.

Disabling Secure Boot in BIOS, followed by a reboot, does not allow linux to be installed.

As far as I know the only way for Linux to be able to see the drive is if the BIOS is set to SATA mode and not RAID.

I contacted Samsung customer support, they also said that the BIOS needed to be set to SATA mode and that I should contact Lenovo. They also said that changig the modes would not decrease hard drive performance.

Do you have any other suggestions on how to proceed. I tried contacting Lenovo customer support with no success.

regards,

Rijesh

Rijesh,

Thank you for your quick reply.

At this time, there is no solution made available by Lenovo. I am collecting feedback from Yoga 900-13ISK2, Yoga 900s, and Yoga 710s customers who all report they are unable to install Linux on their systems, which I will then feed back to the Development team to request BIOS fixes.

Sincerely,
