Re: Yoga 900-13ISK2 - BIOS update for setting RAID mode for missing hard drive on linux install

It's good to know that Lenovo has finally taken notice on this issue. I hope that a fix is available soon.

Re: Yoga 900-13ISK2 - BIOS update for setting RAID mode for missing hard drive on linux install

2016-07-27, 12:20 PM

I now hear that a "potential" fix is in the works (Amy: Lenovo staff)?

Too bad, I already SOLD my Yoga 900-13ISK2 and Lenovo have lost me

as a customer PERMANENTLY!

They even refused to publish my review because I dared mention

the BIOS lock preventing users to set the HD to the mode of their choice

(how pathetic is that?).

I was going to buy a late model X1 Carbon, but after this fiasco, NO WAY!

A word of advice to Lenovo:

When customers spend close to $2000 to buy one of your laptops, never

forget it's NOW THEIR HARDWARE and they

should be able to with it what they wish (including setting the BIOS to

allow them to install ANY OS they choose)!

I couldn't even install Windows 10 Pro!!!!!

Too bad Lenovo, you lost me as a customer!

Hi,

I am attempting to install ubuntu 16.04 on my yoga 900. The bios can see the 512 gb samsung hard drive and so can Windows.

The ubuntu installer can not see it at all. I believe this has to do with the sata mode on the bios. Unfortuneatly there is no option to change it from RAID to AHCI or disabled. Will there be a BIOS update for this in the near future?

Or is there another work around?

Thank you for confirming it is still not possible to install Linux on Yoga 900-13ISK2 systems.

This issue has been escalated to the Development team. I am unable to offer a timeframe for fix at this stage in the investigation. With previous cases, BIOS fixes have been delivered anywhere from several weeks to several months.

I will post again when I have more information on the investigation.

Thank you,

I really hope it doesn't take too long...

For anyone interested in a fix that might actually happen soon, keep your eyes peeled at https://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-Request-Lenovo-Yoga-900-BIOS-Unlock-AHCI-enable-attached-BIOS-fd

someone there seems to care.

This is good news. As an old Lenovo customer, I am still hanging on to my 900 13ISK2 (not returning it) hoping that Lenovo does the right thing soon. If you need a beta tester to test out the BIOS patch, I volunteer.

Maybe Lenovo staff could work with the folks from the bios-mods forum to find a secure repeatable patch for people who weren't able to return their locked devices.

I'm still dissappointed that Lenovo's tech support considered this issue "out of scope" especially when they changed the access to the SSD in the middle of Yoga 900's run.

This problem is what's stopping me from buying an otherwise perfect-looking machine. Will have to buy an alternative if there's no fix for installing Linux very soon!

Is this a joke ?

I buy a laptop and can't even install my own OS on it ???

I bougth this laptop specificly to run a dual boot Linux - Windows...

Did anyone get to return the laptop without the 15% restocking fee ?

Oh, is it possible to take the SSD, plug it to another computer, install linux dual boot windows, then plug it back in the Lenovo ? Would that work ?

First, NO, it's no joke! I sold my 90013ISK2 in frustration.

I didn't try removing the SSD to install linux, but there would be several issues.

1. The other computer would need to accomodate NVMe PCIe flash drive.

2. You would need to consider the graphics, monitor, wifi, lan, and other hardware

settings when replacing the SSD (no easy task).

3. You would need GRUB to overwrite /dev/sda and make sure UEFI is still

not booting Windows after reinstall.

4. The drive would still be in RAID mode (different from the host computer

you install linux on)!

Not worth it in my opinion and completely unacceptable that users would

need to do this to THEIR hardware!

After all, WE bought it! we should be able to use it as we see fit!

I'm no longer buying Lenovo!
