Re: Yoga 920 - How to run Linux?

Thanks! I'm not sure that this counts for Lenovo allowing Linux installs, but at least it's a way to work.

Re: Yoga 920 - How to run Linux?

Summary: The problem with WiFi is fixed in kernel 4.15 (I think).

The problem with WiFi is rather complex. A Yoga counts as an Ideapad. The special hardware in an Ideapad is handled by the ideapad_laptop kernel module. This module handles, among other things, physical switches that block the WiFi and bluetooth radios. The module makes the unfortunate assumption that all Ideapads have this switch and that the default state of the switch is to block WiFi and bluetooth. As Yogas don't have this switch the module can't see that the nonexistant switch is in the allow position. The "fix" is to put each Yoga in a list of Ideapads-that-don't-have-a-radio-switch but this requires a patch to the module and the patch then has to make it into the Linux kernel that you use. The patch has been submitted and I think that it is in kernel 4.15 so when you get that kernel you will no longer have to blacklist the module. Until then you won't get the (minor) benefits that the module provides. You can also patch, compile, and load the module yourself if you want.

Hi! I was able to get Ubuntu running on a Lenovo Yoga 920 2-in-1 without any remnants of Windows on the machine. Details are here: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2382647&p=13730937

I set up a linlap report on what works and what doesn't with the 920 under Linux at https://linlap.info/lenovo_yoga_920

Just want to add: I found a way to not need Windows on the machine at all, so shrinking the Windows partition isn't even necessary. Though, it's a good idea to make and backing up a clone of the original harddrive contents before wiping out the recovery partition.

See this post for details on how to accomplish this.

It is galling to have to devote 50-100 GB of the hard drive to Windows. However, I have used Windows twice on my 920 since I installed Linux - once to update the BIOS and once to get the microphones working. As the 920 has some new hardware that doesn't fully work in Linux it is also useful to be able to see how it works in Windows. As of now I don't have the fingerprint reader working. HDMI displays using DisplayPort alt mode work sometimes but other times hang the machine. I also can't get an Apple Thunderbolt Display to work. I have heard that it is possible to run Windows from an external drive, maybe even a USB stick. I may try that in the future.

I'm running 4.15 under Fedora and there is no longer any need to blacklist ideapad_laptop.

The ideapad_laptop kernel module provides support for the Airplane Mode, Display Switch, and Microphone Mute keys.   Airplane Mode is handled by NetworkManager.  Display Switch doesn't have any handler (in XFCE at least).  Microphone Mute is problematic in that its keycode can't be handled by X11.

Does anyone have a way to get the Microphone Mute key to be translated to an X11 keysym?
