thinkpad e595 and linux

2020-01-18, 18:49 PM

Dear forum users, Are you using this laptop with linux? I have bought this yesterday and I am interesting in using it with Linux,

The first thing I am going to do is to update the Bios, how can you do with Linux?

Are there any plans to support e595 in lvfs tool for this firmware updates, they are easy and.. maybe you can use it on windows too, I only see advantages.

It is possible with a little extra work. This is how I did it:

1. Download the BIOS ISO image from the Lonovo Support page

2. Download geteltorito into the same directory and make executable: wget https://userpages.uni-koblenz.de/~krienke/ftp/noarch/geteltorito/geteltorito/geteltorito.pl

3. Extract the El Torito image: geteltorito -o thinkpadbios.img <BIOS Image>.iso

4. Write it to a USB stick (replace sdX with the correct device ID): sudo dd if=thinkpadbios.img of=/dev/sdX bs=1M status=progress oflag=direct

5. Insert the stick, reboot, F12 on Lenovo logo, select stick and keep your fingers crossed

HTH, Harald

To update my BIOS I simply downloaded the ISO image from Lenovo's website. And ran dd into a pendrive. That was it, fortunately. Boot into the pendrive and follow the instructions.

(EDIT:  I didn't had to download any ElTorito thing)

Linux runs solid. But with each update it might get even better and stable.

do you run Linux in thinkpad e595 or with other thinkapd?

Okey, when you says each update do you mean updates of Bios or Linux?

Thanks in advance and thanks for the answer

I'm using my E495 right now, is pretty much similar.

I mean Linux kernel upgrades and perhaps Mesa (drivers to simplify).
I think BIOS are in good shape already.  But Linux firmware and implementations (AMD part) are still immature, depending on your needs.
Keep in mind that Intel is heavily involved with the linux project.  Their support is much more robust compared to AMD.

(AMD's Linux support is still better compared to NVidia, but still behind Intel).

Edit: that being said.  Something amazing about this thinkpad is that at least in my case you don't need special parameters for grub to boot.  Like I've read for the e585/e485.   It's the best budget AMD laptop for linux IMO.  But again, you might find some minor graphical bugs here and there,  reporting them works!.    If you don't really care about processor's brand.  Intel has a more exhaustive support.  So I assume less bugs :)

Edit2: I DM you.

thank you so much for the explanation.
I am using linux since 2012 more or less, from 2012 to now I have used so many distros. I know that AMD is in worse state that intel , but I think they are improving much better than intel because steam developpers and other developpers with dGPU amd cards, for this and the iGPU of amd being so much powerful than intel ones I have chosen tthat laptop after having returned other. I wish amd is going to improve so much in the months beyond ...

Other question if you want to feed my curiosity, have you dual boot with windows? I want to know the idle power usage in your laptop with windows and linux

In linux you can see it in powertop and with windows you need hwinfo that is free
Thank you again for the explanation and in advance :=)

Hi, did you try it out with Linux? If so what distro and version are you using?

I am currently using it with Ubuntu 19.04, sometimes the keyboard or power off function, can be a little buggy, but it works well most of the time, with an external keyboard.

I'm interested in upgrading to Ubuntu 20.04, but unsure if that will cause problems.
