W500 contains new hardware, in Linux world its almost bleeding edge. Most important thing is checking if your system is up to dane, if so you might need to tweak xorg.conf manually.

And why would you want a stage 1(just curious), especially when Stage 1 installs are not supported.

PS: you will have better luck with gentoo specific questions on forums.gentoo.org or #gentoo.

gentoo's pretty hard core... i'm scared of it.  I once tried to convert my slackware to gentoo through sportage a few years ago, and it trashed my system :-(.  I recommend the newest ubuntu or fedora, i've tried both on my sl300, and I prefer ubuntu with a newer xorg-intel driver package.  I think the linux situation will get a lot better on these new laptops in about 4 months with all the development that's been going on with drivers and such.

@elnino

Sorry for the late reply. You can log on to #gentoo through irc. If you do not have an irc client like xchat/mirc, you can go to http://java.freenode.net/ and enter 'gentoo' (without quotes ;) in the channel field.

I second gartyr23 on gentoo being hardcore. You will be looking at days if not weeks of frustration. To give you an idea, it took me a week to get a working install and a month until i could use it without messing things up ;)
