Lenovo P2 support for Galileo GNSS

2017-04-15, 14:18 PM

Hello,

I'm considering to buy the Lenovo P2 but I wonder if it has support for the Galileo GNSS. As Galileo has the best precision among all GNSS (1 meter public/1 cm private), it is a must have.

As of December 2016 the system has 18 of 30 satellites in orbit. Galileo started offering Early Operational Capability (EOC) on 15 December 2016 and is expected to reach Full Operational Capability (FOC) in 2019. The complete 30-satellite Galileo system (24 operational and 6 active spares) is expected by 2020.

According to Qualcomm documentation, the Snapdragon 625 has builtin support for Galileo, BeiDou, GPS, GLONASS, QZSS and SBAS. The documentation says that in some cases regarding the Galileo just software update is needed. The competition is already selling devices with Galileo support.

It would be very nice of Lenovo to release the needed software update if such indeed is needed.

In the meantime, would anyone be so kind to test if P2 has already support for Galileo? In order to that, you can use the GPSTest from the Android Market. The program uses the new Anroid 7.0 API to identify the type of the satellites.

Here is quote from the GPSTest description:

Supports:
• GPS (USA Navstar)
• GLONASS (Russia)
• QZSS (Japan)
• BeiDou/COMPASS (China)
• Galileo (European Union)

GLONASS satellites are shown as squares on the Sky view, U.S. NAVSTAR satellites are shown as circles, Galileo and QZSS satellites are shown as triangles, and BeiDou satellites are shown as pentagons.

Thank you in advance!

There's no Galileo satellites showing on my P2 phone. All the others are there.

That's sad. I assume you have Android 7.0 installed? I also assume that you currently live somewhere in South Asia or Oceania because that is QZSS satellites are only visible.

By the way, did you use GPSTest to test for the Galileo support? If you did, the description says that both QZSS and GALILEO satellites are visible as triangles. How can you say if the triangles are not Galileo satellites?

Ok, bit of a brief answer earlier. Here's more detail:

P2 is running Android 7.0 (P2a42_S233_170404_ROW). I'm in UK, so you are correct - there is no QZSS visible on GPSTest (seems to be the only similarly named app on the play store), though the symbols are not quite as you describe. In the settings page each satellite constellation can be individually toggled on/off, so no Galileo visible here. Hope this helps!

I see. So the description of the application must be wrong then because that is where I got the identification symbols info from. Above satellite 33 you can see both the shapes of GPS and SBAS that complete overlap each other.

Thank you very much for your efforts!

Lenovo please add galileo support with update. Snapdragon 625 SOC has support already as shown at galileo website.
