Active Protection causes computer to lock up

2009-02-09, 20:03 PM

Hi,

I have a problem with my X61 tablet. The Thinkvantage Active Protection System causes the computer to lock up every time it is moved. It freezes and a hard reset is required.

I am virtually certain that the active protection system is at least part of the problem. The lockups occur when the computer is moved, and you can see the icon in the task bar indicating that the active protection has kicked in on the frozen screen. I turned off the active protection system and it has not locked up since.

I've had the tablet for almost a year and although it has occasionally locked up, the problem has just in the past few days become severe: now it locks up whenever it is moved even a little bit -- a severe shock is not required to trigger it.

A google search gave me a couple forums where people proposed that the problem was due to the interaction of active protection and Intel Turbo Memory, but I disabled my intel turbo memory and the problem remained. There was also a proposed solution involving hybrid hard drive power saving mode, but I have that diabled, and in any case the problem occurs when the computer is plugged in.

Does anyone know what the problem is? Is there a fix? Obviously I would prefer to have the active protection system running.

Thank you.

Update!

Just got the lock-up even with the active protection disabled. So it appears I was mistaken -- possibly a hardware problem? Maybe I'll try reposting over in the x group instead of the thinkvantage group after some more tests.

Yes ther is a problem vith Active protection system. 1.62 ang got lot worse when i upgraded HDD to Seagate Momentus 5400.6 (500GB) = ST9500325AS... Fix is to unstall ActiveProtectionSXystem until is fixed.

(it was better with old drive Hitachi 160GB, but it not usabele with new one more locups per day, Notebook in not usable in a car any more, as wont iven completly boot until a freeze :)....) Firs i tought i bought defective drive, but drive should be ok...

(removing turbo memory tid not fix the problem)...

it supports Unload capability, but there is som huge incompatibility with TV APS software.

When can we expect new release of APS ?

I disabled it using the checkbox in the control panel for the program. When it still had problems, I went into the windows control panel and kept the application from starting with windows. When it still had problems, I restarted in safe mode. Still locked up.

The computer was still under warranty so I ended up sending it in to be looked at. If they fix it and tell me what the problem was, I can post it.

I am having quite a lot of difficulty with this as well.  I am a student and use my T400 on my lap a fair amount.  The lock up usually tends to occur after a movement.  It seems that the hard drive is not released to continue functioning.  Any functions requiring the hard drive cease while those functions that are run from the RAM continue to operate for a while.  I am looking for a solution but decreasing the sensitivity does not seem to stop the problem.

Well, I got it back from the warranty repair center. The action report says that they replaced the system board, updated the BIOS, and reloaded the factory installed software.

However, it still has the problem. Looks like they did everything except actually fix what was wrong.

Just uninstall ActiveProtectionSystem... and then wait for HDD firmware update or new version of APS!!! Until than be more carefull when carring powered laptop that's all.

(whit my old HDD a had occasional lockups 1-3 a week. With new one (seagate Momentus 5400.6 system wont even boot powered on i a car with lot of moments when APS should kick in!).

Lenovo HAS TO FIX THAT!

I used to get occasional lockups which the Active Protection could have been to blame for. This is different: it happens almost all the time. In any case, I did try uninstalling the program and it still did it, so even though I originally thought it was the culprit, it turns out it's not to blame.
