Re: Changes to System Update and related tools - Please read

I'm so angry about the decision to shut down this service.  I sell computer hardware and have in the past thought the thinkpad line was superior to others on the market.  When IBM sold the product line I was very worried about what might happen to it.  I guess I was right.  The decision to shut down this service is just plain stupid. This was a great service and now you shut it down. Extremely poor move.

Guess my request to become a Lenovo partner will be withdrawn and I will not be purchasing Lenovo in the future.

Could someone tell how to activate Message System Plus? I did install it but I can't find anything to activate it. It is said to disable the normal Message System but I had it shut down a long time ago, I always turn it off.

Nonsense, I bought my machine for its professional graphics card, case with a rollcage, a lid that doesn't catch fingerprints, trackpoint, keyboard (which still feels good albeit is a bit loud) and so on. It would be good even if I stopped updating today.

This is VERY disappointing. I have been a long time Thinkpad user and found this software extremely useful. Especially when reinstalling Windows. Now I will have to go to the website (find the website?) and download everything individually? And have to deal with that stupid download manager that always opens in a new window? AND THEN I have to find whatever random dir the drivers have been extracted to and THEN install them? This is a real step backwards. Ridiculous.

Although I have had problems using the System Update software in the past, it was still very useful.

But I guess I''m finding ALL of the ThinkVantage software less and less appealing, as it becomes lower in quality and higher in usage of system resources.

Oh well. It was good while it lasted...

I didn't read it that way, but I'll concede the point.  Before Mark's 3/31/2009 post, there was the 6/03/2008 post (here) and the twin 9/18/2008 posts (here and here).  So one never knows how these plans might play out.

Fair enough. However, had the April 1 announcement even alluded to this issue, then this thread would have been a fraction of the size it now is. Indeed if the links you provided were more widely publicized, or if as an interim measure TVSU had to be manually started, then perhaps its withdrawal would not have been necessary at all or at least could have been delayed until a viable alternative was available.

My criticisms are meant to be constructive. Lenovo could have done this a lot better than they did. But make no mistake about this: I am a long time IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad customer and fan. The last thing I want is for the value of my purchases to be devalued or for the brand names to become debased. Hopefully Lenovo will learn from this experience and do better next time.

Agree -- a good summary.

This history explains a lot. But retiring TVSU, is Lenovo going down the right path replacing it with a LANDesk Patch Manager  based solution?  Is there constructive feedback we could give Lenovo on the requirements for a TVSU replacement?

For instance, did Lenovo explore with Microsoft if for the Lenovo updates they could duplicate the Microsoft Update web site, which demonstrably has the required capacity? Interfacing it to the already existing Automatic Update client in Windows and Microsoft's corporate update solution WSUS.

I finally got to talk to my supplier about this and the only response they've had from Lenovo is that [it] "is definitely going to be pulled, and that there are no plans for anything to replace the service."

Re: Changes to System Update and related tools - Please read

I found this thread after discovering that System Update on my few-months-old X300 no longer works.

I'm annoyed that one of the most important features of the laptop, that I paid extra money to get, is now taken away from me with no notice and no suitable replacement.

I'm even more annoyed that I advised a friend to buy the X301 instead of another make because of System Update. I have given him bad advice and I look foolish because of it.

Thank you very much Lenovo, and goodbye!.

This is a bad thing.  It was one of the better benefits of buying Lenovo.  I hope you have something better in store.

Has anyone had a really satisfactory experience using DriverCure or any other third-party driver update programs?
