I just have to write my reply also, I noticed the absence of TVSU on day one. TVSU never was perfect, downloads were rather slow and many times you just received an error message... But it was still the best thing on Thinkpads.

When I started to work with Thinkpads (560, 1996) drivers were not such a burden, but on current T60, T61 series laptops they are. Frequent maintenance is needed, or there will be trouble. I have only 50 laptops to maintain, but TVSU has helped me a lot. I've tried update retriever, but never got it to work correctly.

LANDesk solution is no doubt a versatile software, but I wonder if I have enough talent to get it up and running.. Also, what will be the cost and system requirements for it.

I hope that Message Center + comes alive with easy to use (and deploy) update system. Until then, I'm stuck with manual updates.

Re: Changes to System Update and related tools - Please read

It seems difficult to add something new to the comments from the many loyal customers who are now becoming really disgruntled customers.

The services such as System Update (and it's predecessor) actually increased unit sales, by making it possible for us to recommend IBM and Lenovo products for use by even technically-challenged users.  Those people needed to start with reliable hardware, and be confident that updates would be easy.

So I think that Lenovo is making a poor decision, by making it impossible for us to recommend Lenovo computers.  Furthermore, this action by Lenovo make us (the loyal customers, trusted by friends, family, and colleagues) look foolish.

Maybe the world really is going to hell in a handbasket.

It would be nice if someone in marketing would listen to Mark and the many comments in this forum, and at least explain their logic behind what seems to be an appalling action.

Thanks.

Ever since Lenovo took over the TP line things have been going downhill. Product quality, service quality, software support. I wish IBM would have stuck with it.

As an IBM stockholder I have been reading their annual reports and for the last ten years before they gave up the "normal" loss of their PC division was about one billion dollars per year, in a good year maybe "only" 100 million.

So the question is, can Lenovo make the Thinkpad line profitable or will they have to terminate it.

IBM is still Lenovo's largest stockholder (out of the publicly held 48% of the shares) with I think 6.7% of the shares so I have to believe even after the 5-year agreement between Lenovo and IBM expires next year it's in IBM's interest that Lenovo is able to continue the Thinkpad line for IBM's customer set.

Keeping my fingers crossed -- it would be terrible to watch the Thinkpad line sink into the sea.

Wow, it sounds like to be a good news in the dark! :D

You are most probably right with the figures. The question is, wether the TP Division of IBM ever considered to be profitable? I always thought it was like a laptop part of Panasonic: limited offer for the customers who intentionally buy they really want to buy with the very good understanding why. We just may confirm that the idea to push TP in the consumer market among all that schrott  acers and asuses was a dead born idea. :P

The real problem is we have no alternative. Nothing at all. :(

Let me just add my voice to the storm of protest.

This has been so poorly communicated and handled...

If there were a proper replacement coming, wouldn't have been better to have it in place before shutting down  TVSU? This, along with the dearth of information on any replacement, leads me to beleive there will be no replacement.

As someone else said:

'If you want to prune down the thinkvantage suite, I applaud that decision, but trim the fat not the meat'

If I had to have one TV ap running on my system it would be this (I actually have three installed; this, the power manager, and access connections).

Thinkvantage System Update not working ? This is probably why !!!!!

2009-04-26, 20:10 PM

For months on end since September 2008 I have been searching for a fix for my Thinkvantage System Update.  I have finally discovered the answer to my problem...when I tried to redownload the software this is what I found.

"Lenovo is changing the way customers obtain updates for their PCs and Servers.

For our PC customers, automatic updates via ThinkVantage System Update (TVSU) are being discontinued. Customers can continue to download updates by accessing the Lenovo support site at Lenovo Support & downloads. Lenovo is pursuing alternative solutions for system updates and future offerings will be communicated through the new Lenovo Message Center Plus."

So get ready for hours of searching for updates, hours of reading "readme" files, hours of praying that you have the right downloads, and hours of hoping you have all the downloads you need to make your IBM ThinkPad run, let alone run safely and efficiently.

Guess we lowley PC users don't rate high enough to warrant real customer service or system maintainence. I guess they could care less if they loose business due to non-existant service after they get your money. Alot of people say the amount of software IBM packs on your laptop is excessive, and I guess they are right, because obviously there is too much software for IBM to even keep up with and maintain.  What a sellout!!!!!!  Guess I should have bought anything but an IBM.

@ M56Zp9r7,

I moved your post to this thread as it reflects alot of other members' comments here and didn't want to have a duplicate thread running in another board.

Regards
